Barking in Apartment Hey guys.. I recently moved from the suburbs to an apartment with my Yorkie puppy. He is about six months old and we live in a large studio apartment. A neighbor recently told me my dog barks "all the time during the day" -- which isn't true because I am home all the time during the day with him. I spend every hour in that apartment with him except for anywhere between 1.5-3.5 hours at night (I am taking grad school classes). He does bark here and there when I am home with him during the day, but it is only because he hears people opening and closing their doors. His barks then are not continuous and only last for a minute or two tops. I don't know how much he barks when I'm not home, but I do know he usually whines when I leave but the hallway will be quiet when I return from class. I am going to tape record him next time to see if the barking really is a problem when I leave or if my neighbor is just exaggerating. I know I am the only one on the floor with a dog (so she's probably a bit annoyed that there is a dog), but the building has many dogs living on the other floors. This neighbor also has bratty kids that scream that I can often hear through the walls and she doesn't quit them down. Anyway, does anyone know of any ways to stop a dog from barking when you are not home? Especially in an apartment where noise tends to be closer than a house. Also, do any of those "bark stop" devices or sound/odor emitting things actually work? Any help would be great, as I am afraid the rest if my neighbor gets aggravated by this she may call the cops when I'm not home. Thank you! |
Hmmm. I wish I knew the answer, my Bailey is just over 5 months and barks sometimes too, I am not really suppose to have pets in my buliding..although many people do have them, I just hope I don't get a complainer:rolleyes: I tried coins in a can, a squirt bottle..Bailey jusy barks harder!..If you find a solution please post! Good luck :) |
I do not know if you have found a solution yet but I thought I would post a suggestion in case not. Luckily my puppy is not a barker but my sister's was. He is now 4 years old and barks occassionally but when he was younger he would bark a lot....especially when my sister left the house. She bought a citronella collar (it goes on like a collar and squirts a burst of citronella at her dog's face when he barks and it shocks him enough to stop him). He does not need the collar anymore but it has helped in the past a lot. I have looked into the reviews and some people say their dogs dont mind the citronella spray or that it makes them bark harder so its not guaranteed to work for you. BUt it worked for my sister's dog so maybe it is worth a shot. It is a bit costly if I remember correctly (maybe $70-100) but it worked for her. |
Thanks so much! i just found one on amazon for $30, so i am going to try it and see how it works. |
My puppy wasn't really a barker till' last week...he started barking and whining if I'd close my rooms door. I also live in an apartment, I've read many threads and I personally don't like the collar. I tried shaking the pennies in a can and yelling "quiet". My puppy stops the crying and whining when I shake the can..maybe u should start there? If it doesn't work then try other methods? :) |
What if you vidoe tape or sound tape what is going one. Could there be a noise or someone buggin him. Like walking by and on purpose knoting at your door. Maybe it is not him but another dog. We had a simlar issuse with one of my dogs and I went the beep coller way no zap no spray. What I should have done was put them to work on kongs and other things to keep them happy and busy...rookie mistake. Also found out later it was not my dog it was upstairs. I was home and ther was barking...yeah not mine. Why I suggested tape it first and find out for sure it is your dog. JL |
this happened to me years ago with my chow. i was home most all day every day and i still had this one lady picking on me, saying he was barking loudly and stuff that was NOT happening. turns out, some people just don't like you or dogs in general, especially when you are dealing with an apt. building, as i was to. turns out, this 'stranger' i didn't even know, just was looking to start trouble, it's sad and bizarre even, for people to act this way, but it happens, and if you know it's not the case, chances are the minimul barking is being heavilly played up by this person FOR SOME reason, if not just to upset you, don't ask, i don't understand it, i just know it can happen, or they are hearing a different dog and blaming yours. you would know how much your own dog is barking. it stinks to me, just my opinion. Fellow Apartment dweller My husband and I live in a two bedroom apt in a very large community. My little Lola doesn't bark unless she is left alone for a long period of time. Luckily, my husband and I work at home so she is very rarely left by herself. I would just try to talk with your neighbor and be as friendly as possible. The apt above us constantly has loud music playing and people running around so we basically made a pact, we wont make a fuss if they don't. |
