training help My roomate and I just got 2 yorkies from the shelter. We put them in the crate and i think one of them pee inside the crate. Is it b/c the crate is too big? We got one close to 36 inch width (big enough for a 60 dogs). We kept both of them in one crate. We will return the crate today and get a smaller one. What is the ideal size for an 11 lbs, 3 years old Yorkie? Also how long can they hold it in the crate? My roomate work from 7 am to 5 pm and i work from 8am to 6 pm. So they will be in the crate for more than 8 hours. Final question, what is the good band of food to feed your yorkie? and Can we just use any dog's shampoo to give thema bath? |
Why did you two adopt when your not home for many hours at a time? I'm sorry, but I do feel very sorry for dogs that are left in a crate like that. It isn't normal for them. Dogs shouldn't be expected to hold their pee and poo for such a long time. It can also cause medical problems. Maybe you should think of re-homeing these two dogs and get a couple of cats. |
You shouldn't leave a dog like that in a crate for more than 8 hours, it should be only 2-4 hours. Because they'll be digesting and then they'll have to go potty!:animal-pa |
So are you trying to tell me, young profession should not adopt any dog b/c we havea 8-5 job? |
I was doing research online and it said Yorkie can hold up to 10 hours. |
Well, you could always hire a doggy sitter, or have someone from your family come and visit, otherwise no. Edit: well that depends on how big the yorkie is, if the yorkie is 10in off ground from shouler to ground, it can hold up to that, but 8ins and down cannot |
I am hoping to potty train him so i don't have to leave him in the crate. |

To Benxiaohaivi, personally, I would try to block off a gated area of the house or get a big ex-pen of some sort to keep the dogs in and not a crate. You can also always find a local petsitter to come by once during the day and let them out, there's doggie daycares available (as crazy as that sounds!) etc. So you have many options. What are your dogs names? How cute you got them both together. :) They should love growing up with each other. As for food, some good brands are Innova, Wellness, Merrick's, Nature's Variety, Taste of the Wild, etc. I feed Jackson Innova and TOTW. |
The previous owner has a family illness and have to give them up. The shelter prefer them adopted together. We name them Tom and Jerry :P As of right now, i scheduled to feed them at 6 am and walk them at 7:55 am. My roommate will be back at 5 to let them out and fee them. And i walk them again before i go to bed (probably around 11ish). |
ok... They are 3 yrs old and were just taken from the only family that they've been with and now they are in a new place with new people and a new routine....SO...It's gonna take time ;) I would suggested getting baby gates and keeping them in the kitchen area or hall or some room that doesn't have carpet. Most people free fed their Yorkies and some good brands are: Natural Balance, Wellness, Merrick, Solid Gold Keep to a routine, they like consistancy ;) Give them lots of love bc they are probably scared and confussed right now. As far as potty, it all depends on each Yorkie. They may be used to be let out to do potty all the time, so you can't expect them to follow your work hours right away. Can one of you come home at lunch to give them a potty break  You should also make it a point to let them out to do potty FIRST thing in the morning and LAST thing at night before bed time. |
Congrats on getting your pups...I too work 9-5, add another hr for the commute. I would suggest that if you have a room in your place where you can leave the 2 of them with some space to roam and set up pee wee pads. Or you can try to block some space by using gates. That's another reason why I couldn't crate train Duke (or more didn't know how) because I work long hour and was not sure if it was healthy to leave him in a crate for so long. Good luck and be patient with them... |
