New Yorkier owner! Hi everyone! I'm new to Yorkie talk and am expecting my own baby boy in 2-3 weeks. For my first question how many times should i feed him a day and how much do i feel him? |
Welcome and congratulations. Your breeder should give you the feeding schedule the puppy has been on and how much to feed. If he is really little he will need more frequent meals. Can't wait to see pictures. |
Hello and welcome to YT!!! Congratulations on your future new additiosn! How old will your puppy be when you get it home? |
Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk! Congrats on your soon to be little one. :) |
Welcome and congratulations. |
Hi and Welcome toYT!!!!! Congradulations on your new baby!!!! |
Welcome to YT :wavey: Congrats on your new addition - how exciting!:D When I first bought my two home (11 weeks) I was feeding three meals a day....they were both quite large at that age though (around 3lb). I've read that hypoglaecemia (sorry about my spelling:rolleyes:) can be an issue with the very little ones so your little boy may need small, frequent meals instead, and also have some nutrical on hand just in case. I hope this is some help to you. Congratulations again xxx xxx |

Hi, congratulations on getting your new baby boy. Joey's breeder recommended free feeding the first 6-8 months of life, and some people continue to free feed for the whole life of the dog. Like anything, there are advantages and disadvantages to free feeding, but for the first few months or until a dog is 4-5 pounds the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages. Free feeding, by the way is just having kibble available at all time, hypoglycemia is a risk with small breeds, and especially puppies. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is easy to treat, but can be deadly, and unfortunately, one of the symptoms is loss of appetite, and the dog needs to eat something to return blood sugar to normal.. Puppies don't have fat reserves like an older dog, and can use all their energy in one play period, and if blood sugar drops too low, symptoms of hypoglycemia will result. Many people treat this with a sugar suppliment such as white Karo syrup or Nutri-Cal, but this can cause more dips in blood sugar, so it's best if food with protein is available at all times. The smaller your dog, the more important this is. Don't use Nutri-cal as a preventative, only as a treatment; otherwise you can cause an attack of low blood sugar. |
:welcome4:to YT and congrats on your new baby!!! Tootsie's has been free feeding since we brought her home in May...This was our first yorkie and I was afraid of getting hypoglycemia. So we kept food and fresh bottled water available for her. I agree~talk with breeder to find out current feeding schedule. We have made the mistake of giving Tootsie people food (we can't resist her cute little face) and it has made her sick!!! Now she gets NO PEOPLE FOOD at all, we didn't realize how sensitive their little digestive systems are...Good luck to you and your furbaby!!!:aimeeyork |
:welcome4:Congatulations !!! and welcome to YT!! If Your baby is really small you really do need to feed small frequent meals. My little one was tiny when we got her and we had several episodes with hypoglycemia.:animal-pa :aimeeyork:heart torhonda:heart tophoebe:aimeeyork:heart to |
