Place/Mat Has anyone on here used the mat that Victoria Stillwell uses all the time to calm dogs? The may she uses for them to "settle" "calm" or "relax". I haven't tried it and I don't know if I really need to, but I am working on my dog jumping on people and thought maybe I could try this method. Has anybody used it successfully or unsuccesfully? One thing I like about Victoria is that she tries different methods to see which ones work for each dog. |
I have never heard of the mat method before I saw her do it. But I like it too. Its an easy marker for your dog to know where to go, depletes some unnecessary confusing for the dog, very smart. |
I haven't done it either, but it does seem like a good idea. :) |
Start slow and build up the length of time to stay in place. I tend to us my dogs large kennel for her go settle place and she will put here self in it when she needs a brake. There is a device called the manners minder that was created by Sophie yin that can help with the process. It is a long used way for settling down over active dogs. The other thing that does well for buy dogs is protocol for relaxation. Hand in hand with the mat it teaches dogs to stay calm pretty much no matter what. Also part and pacel of the control unleahed way of doing things. JL |
