how to discipline biting 10 week old puppy I love Woody to pieces, but biting is unacceptable! What is an effective way to discipline him without hurting him, he's just a baby and he weighs 1.8 lbs. He is biting everything, including me, and it has to stop before it's a really big problem. We have many things that are ok to chew on, toys, cheweys etc. He chews these things as well as other things. |
When Cali went through a bad biting phase, I would tell her No bite firmly and stop playing with her, it took awhile but she grew up to be a real sweety. |
Use your fingers like a mouth, nip him in the neck and make a snapping sound like the mother would do. Then put him aside and walk away. If he yelps it is a good thing, it does not mean that you hurt him, but will show that he got the message. This has to be done instantly. Do not push him away, that just makes a game of it. Everyone in the house needs to know to do this. I have watched my mother dogs do this with their puppies and the puppies learn very quickly. |
I would suggest a high pitched owww! and then put him down and walk away, arms crossed. Ignore him for a few minutes. But be consistent and absolutely no biting. |
Whenever Tinky bites me, I yelp in a really high pitch, almost like screaming. Actually, I yelp in a high pitch whenever I don't want her to do something. She usually freezes and looks up at me and I sternly say "No". Tinky's only 2 pounds at the moment so that's probably the most effective way I make her stop. |
Hi. I know how you are feeling. I love my Dustie to death..He is now 6 months old and from 8 weeks brining him home he has been a "nipper" sometimes really bad biting when he gets wound up...So I have had to watch playtimes with him...I have used every method including No bite...finger in the mouth...ignoring him..walking away...He is gradually declining from this habit...but it is taking time.. Like you I wanted it to stop as soon as possible...I agree it is not acceptable behaviour..but you must be consistent in what you decide to do. Although you love your pup..you must show your instant disapproval...and that you will not allow it to continue. I have found that putting the finger into the mouth and down the throat a little seems to be the method for me...Also when Dustie gets really wound up I take him by the scruff of the neck..lift him slightly and say a very sharp "No bite"...sometimes also tapping him on the n ose with the other hand..then I put him down..and ignore him...Sounds cruel but it does work. Don't ignore this behaviour...as it needs controlling now...or you will be stuck with it later. Chrisann. |
Little guys are very attuned to whatever you do so it's going to be very easy to stop him Like the people have said before when he bites you make a big noise OW! and pull whatever he is biting away You can use the little neck tug if you want but it's not necessary Just get up and leave the little guy to ponder what he did Just don't make the mistake of thinking it's cute and play fight with him |
I just finished puppy classes at Petsmart, we had a 4 lb silky in the class that was biting since he was 8 weeks old. The trainer would lie him on his back and gently hold him and tell him NO BITE! This seemed to work because he had calmed down a lot after the 8 weeks. The owner also did this at home. The position was to show him the owner was in charge. She also said to yelp when the dog nips you and quit playing with them |
Tucker will be a year old next week and I am still having trouble with him chewing on me. He acts like I am his chew toy. He has lots of toys. When I try to play with him it always turns into chewing so I have to stop playing. I can tell him no and get stern with him and it will stop for that time but he will just do it the next time again. my husband rough houses with him sometimes and gets him wound up. I keep telling him that does not help at all. |
Luckily, Maddie only bites at my fingers (she is 15 weeks old). When she does I put my hands in my lap and ignore her until she stops trying to get at them and once she calms down I tell her "good girl!" and start playing againg. If she goes right back to biting, I ignore her again and do the same thing. She is starting to get the picture. As far as biting other things, I bought some bitter yuck spray at Petco and it is great. Although, make sure you wash your hands after spraying it because I got some on my fingers and went to eat something...OMG I know why she won't chew on what I spray that stuff on! haha |

Yes, I agree~ we are in puppy training now..Tootsie has been a biter since we got her at 8 weeks old. She is soooo bad that she has drawn blood on several occasions. The vet told us to do the same thing~gently lay her on her back and hold her there until she becomes calm~talk to her while she is on her back and tell her "no bite"~after she is calm you let her up and give her a chew toy!!! There were times at first when we would have to hold her down up to 20 times a day...Tootsie was the smallest of her litter but the Alpha Dog as well. She still tries to bite every now and then but mostly we tell her "No bite" and she listens. She is 5 months old now. Also, our puppy trainer told us to say "Ow" in a slightly high pitched voice when she bites~their attention spans are very short so if you say "ow" and then give them a chew toy that works well too...Tootsie seems to like the nylon chew toys the best!!! Now since she is nearly toothless in front she can only buty with her eye teeth!!! LOL!!! |
I have the same problem. Codys almost 10 weeks and his little sharp teeth have made me bleed! When hes playing he'll bite fingers, toes, my arm, even sometimes my face when he gets really hyper. He latches on and doesn't let go. I've been trying the yelp, stop playing and walk away method but he just looks at me like he doesnt understand. He's still young but I want to "nip" the problem in the butt before it gets worse. |

When my first Yorkie was young, she ignored everything I said. So finally in frustration I growled at her. I never saw her get so still. Worked great until she learned English, and then she listened to words! |
