How to housebreak your puppy in 7 days RECAP....

;)So I started the book and let me tell you ITS GREAT..... We had 2 accidents but I was expecting because she was getting use to.. But the past 2 days have been great... NOW here is my dilemma.... What do I do about this rain? To train her in the rain is horrible.... Yesterday it rained in the morning so when I took her out to potty in afternoon the grass was wet... Now she is stinky.... I read somewhere that I should rub a dry sheet on her but it doesn't seem to work.. I don't want to bath her because I took her to the groomers on Saturday.. But honestly when I bathe at home she doesn't stink so fast as she does when I take her to petsmart... Is it me? What other methods are their for stinky pups :(

All in all I wanted to know how everyone's training was going.... Any advice that can be given would be great. I'd appreciate and I'm sure the other readers would to :D;)

I just give Thor a mini bath in the sink. He's pretty funny, he knows the drill, and stands with his paws on the edge and his butt in the water. For pee stink, you can use a grooming wipe.

FYI, I have heard a lot of bad stories about PetSmart grooming, I would recommend you either take her somewhere else, or groom her on your own.

Right now its just something your gonna have to live with until she gets bigger. i took morgan out in the pouring rain to get her to quickly potty in all types of weather. I find that if you blow dry them after they come in from the rain it prevents them from smelling.

Oh No quicksilver please share...

The one thing I hate about petsmart grooming is that I waited 4 hours for her to be ready..... I couldn't believe it.. I do bath her at home every week sometimes every 2 weeks when she REALLY needs it but I took her to petsmart because she needed a trim... I want to buy a clipper but I'm afraid I might cut off more then I should  Plus she moves to much to get her bottom hairs... Thats the one that bothers her more... ;) AND not to mention her nails OMG one time I cut them and I cut to short that she started to bleed and I started to cry.... hahahhahaha

How about a raincoat for her? I'm thinking about doing that for Fancy because it can rain alot here during fall. She hates stepping in the dew on the grass - I'm also thinking about some booties maybe for winter. (if she hates wet grass then I'm sure she is going to hate the cold ground)

I don't know what to tell you about the grooming because I have always groomed Fancy myself and I bathe her a couple times a week (okay a few:rolleyes:) because she sleeps with us in the bed and I don't like the outside smell. But I do mini baths when she comes in, I rinse her feet off if it is wet outside from the morning dew and I wash her booty daily in the sink.:p

Oh my I just googled Petsmart horror stories and I came across and it was only posted Feb of this year...

Miniature Yorkshire Terrier: Another PetSmart Horror Story

So, I've been aware of the terrible PetSmart grooming stories for awhile, but what about PetCo? Anything similar with them? My vet recommended our PetCo because they are clean, require shot records, and her other clients who use them had good things to say. I know you can necessarily judge one store by one across the country or anything, but I'm curious!

I'm sure that's true. You can always go and check out their facilities and see what you think.

A few dogs have died in PetSmart's care, and a lot of people here have had less extreme, but still unpleasant experiences -- dogs coming back with abrasions, nicked ears, dogs coming back really scared, really bad, slow grooming jobs, etc.

I am also scared to cut Thor's nails. I think a 4 hour grooming window is normal - the dog is crated for most of it. If you check out Yelp.com, you may find some good groomers in your area, or maybe your vet or breeder can recommend someone. Or you can ask here. Apparently you can also just bring a dog to get its nails trimmed for a nominal fee and do the rest yourself.

I use Earthbath Pet Grooming Wipes on Maddie between baths almost everyday. When it is raining I always wipe her really quick everytime she comes in from going potty. I use the kind that are "especially for puppies". They work really well and people always ask if she just got a bath or if I used perfume on her LOL. I got them at Petco

I was having this problem because my roommate has a lab and they love to dig in the mud together. My groomer recommended waterless shampoo. There is a brand Nature something or other that works really good. It takes a few minutes to spray him towel dry and brush. Then I take puppy wipes and clean his paws and tummy. I think it works really good. Capone has a nice shiny pretty coat and I want it to stay that way. I used to use petsmart and petco and they did an ok job, just dependedd on the actually groomer (I had one that I always requested) but I was never thrilled, my friend recommended a small grooming shop and I love them, they're great and a few dollars cheaper.

Another good product if they aren't dirty but just kind of smell like "dog" is doggy deodorant. The kind in the aerosol can works best, not the spray bottle, in my opinion.

Oh that sounds good I'm going to have to check it out... I have a inbetween baths spray but I get scared at times because she runs away from me and I don't want to spray her in the eyes LOL!!!

I have a waterless shampoo its a Paul Mitchell shampoo made of oatmeal I was reading the bottle last night never even noticed the label LOL!!!!

Thanks guys Luckily its sunny here today so the grass dried up....

I'm going to have to search for a private groomer... No more Petsmart for me :D

Hi, I started this book in January (I think it was?). GREAT book. It took longer than 7 days, but it did work. You just have to be consistent.

The rain --- you go out, and you stand in it, no longer how long it takes. You have to teach them that it doesn't matter if it rains, they have to do their business. And by you standing there with them, you're showing them that if you can do it, so can they. You're setting the example. Cannot tell you how many times I've had to stand through torrential rainstorms just to get the potty.....they finally learned. :)

Best of luck!!

oh that's great I'm hoping she catches on to even though I'm stArting late. She's been poop and pee when I take her but sometimes she just wants to look around and not do her business. Hopefully in time she will catch on. I just hope it doesn't take to much time. Lol. Tomorrow Is our first saturday.

Hi everyone so I'm on my 9th day of Housebreaking Roxy the 2nd and 3rd there were mistakes.. But after the 3rd day its been pretty good... I read on another thread that dogs love Cheese as treats... So I decided to try it out and see.. OMG she absolutely loves them..... Before when I would take her out she would not eat a treat outside for some reason so I said to myself OMG she is never going to catch on. She won't go pee just cause I jump up and down for joy :D So I tried the cheese and I must say its been a success... So far so good.. I have her pooping schedule to a T I know what time she'll go and when she pee's I love it.... This morning was actually very funny because she inhaled her food in less then 10mins I usually take those 30 mins to get dressed for work. Well she inhaled it and when I was in bathroom getting ready she comes to me and starts whimpering so of course I took it as "Hey u take me out I need to poop" so I did and she did hahahha It was the cutest thing she actually squatted down n looked at me when she finished she ran to me for her treat... I'm still a little afraid to leave her in full kitchen.. Does anyone know what is the time mark on dogs being fully trained?
