Peeing *near* not *on* the pee pad...blargh. Hello-- My 9 m.o. Yorkie, Maxwell, has (until recently--see other thread in Health) been doing alright with pee-pad training, but has one persistent problem. Sometimes, he will walk up to the pee pad, sniff it, and pee without walking completely onto the pad. The pee will land 3-4" off the edge of the pad on the carpeted floor. (When he poos, he always makes sure he is entirely on the pad.) Anyway, does anyone know a good way to correct this annoying behavior? We've tried a litter box (lined with a pad), a pad holder, and of course verbal corrections when he pees near the pad but not on it. |
I can see a couple ways to work with this: - Do you reward him for good potties? If you do, don't reward for these. He will try to figure out how to get the treat. You will be "shaping" his potty behavior. - Are you still watching him potty? If so, just move him onto the pad, and then praise him. You are going to have to catch him in the act one way or the other to correct it. If you find it after the fact, there's no good way to communicate to him what he did wrong. |
