social problems Hi, Has anybody got any tips, when taking charlie out for a walk he is fine until another dog walks past, then he wont stop barking or pulling on the lead. He also tried to chaise a seagul on the beach and ran off and wouldnt come back. Thanks Zoe |
I was having the same problem with Harley pulling all the time and going crazy when he saw other dogs while on our walks,i have now been using the Gentle Leader Harness and find it has helped me so much ,he is far more focused and our walks have become far more enjoyable..:) |
We have the same problem. I'm trying some of the positive rewards but she gets so excited that she ignores the treats. On the last walk it was a tiny bit better but we have a longggggggggg way to go. :dogwalk: Gentle Leader Harness? I have seen them mentioned but don't know what they do exactly. Could someone please explain? |
Agree on the Gentle Leader. I use the Premier Easy Walk (both are made by Premier) and it works amazing. Jackson never had this problem of pulling and barking at dogs, but I prevented it before it even began happening. This harness I just love. The D-ring is on the front belly of the harness, rather than the back, and it gently directs them in the other direction. It also greatly helps your dog walk behind you or right beside you. When me & Jackson go for a walk, he walks right beside me and when another dog walks by, he continues on with me no pulling or nothing. Occasionally, he will get excited and begin the tail wagging, but he still will walk by the other dog will no problems. Sometimes, if the other owner allows it, I let them sniff each other and then we continue on. But anyways, I would suggest you try a harness like that, you can get them at Petsmart or Petco, and practice at some sort of a park where lots of dogs are present and practice, practice, practice. You need to work on yourself more than anything. Make sure there's no tension on the leash coming from you, that makes the dog worse. When you walk by a dog, simply guide your dog in the forward direction, pay no attention to your own dog or the other dog, just think about moving forward. Portray a calm energy and don't get stressed or tensed. It will take practice. I would also suggest to give a yummy treat whenever your dog behaves correctly. |

I tend to use the head halter type of harness as it gets the dogs head to turn and as the head goes so does the dog. JL |

I will research it more. Right now, I'm guessing I need the Gentle Leader as it seems to address all of Ginger's issues. I would love more info and/or advice if anyone has any experience on this! |
Thank you very much for all your advice!!! il put it into practice. I think il get one of those harneses too!!! thanks xx:) (zoe & charlie) |
So you know the harness needs to go along with a resoicalization class to help this dog get on with dealing with its concerns. JL |
