house/potty training help Turk turned 1 last month. He was trained to use a pee pad up until just a couple months ago. I haven't been a big fan of this pad method, so I decided to get him trained to go outside(the pad has been gone all summer). He can potty on command(when he wants to), but we are still having accidents in the house. Some days are better than others, but I'm feeling frustrated. I guess my question is...once a dog has been trained to use a pad until almost 10 months old, is it possible to break them of going inside the house? Can they be trained to go OUTSIDE only? I'm hoping that someone can relate to my situation and that there is still hope. I reeally don't won't to bring the pad back inside. :( Thank you for taking the time to read and hopefully answer my concern! |

Some puppies don't even get the hang of their first round of potty training before a year, and yours is already on his way to learning two!! To me it sounds like things are going great! If he's having accidents, I suggest doing what you can to reduce his having the chance to make a mistake. Meaning - take him out every hour or so, or start a potty log so you can see if you are missing a regular "potty time" for him, try to leash him to you while he's out in the house or try the crate training method for a few weeks until he's really got it down. I would clean up his past accidents in the house with an enzyme cleaner, take up any rugs he's taken a fondness for, keep him away from areas of the house he seems to prefer for his accidents, and then go from there. |
I was in this same situation and yes it's possible. You just have to know when to let him out and when to crate/x-pen him. I would put him in his pen and straight outside, if he didn't use it, back to the pen. If he pottied lots of playtime. He caught on pretty quick and I like it way better than pee pads. |
Good to know! Thank you for sharing and giving your input. :) |
