How can I train his to sleep in his own bed? Hi everyone (new to the group here) I wanted to post a question and hopefully someone has a suggestion for me. Here's the deal....I recently rescued a sweet lil' fella ("Roy" is his name) and Im having a VERY hard time getting him to sleep in his own bed. My husband is getting annoyed because he doesn't want "Roy" in bed with us....however, everytime I put "Roy" in his own bed and tell him to lay down and stay....he complies, but only until I start to walk away LOL then he follows me to my bed. I tried ignoring him but he continues to jump up and down and cry until I either give in or he manages to jump up to our bed (I didn't think he could do it, but he did!) By then Im tired and just want some sleep so....Roy snuggles up next to me, and my husband rolls over and turns his back to me LOL I need help! I love Roy but I really would love for him to sleep in his OWN bed. |
LOL boy you brought back memories of Bud:p As small as he was he would jump up on the bed during the night. My bed is 37" high! Not only worried about an injury I did not want to sleep with a dog. Sorry but it's the truth. My kids slept with our family pet's over the years not I. I kept a magazine under the cover's and every time he jumped up I would slap the magazine on the bed, tell him NO and put him back in his bed. He didn't care he kept jumping up so I gave up and let him sleep with me.:p That was 5 1/2 yrs ago. However, there was a time when I banned him from the bed due to aggression. I put his bed next to mine and bought a soft 6' leash and harness, made by a YT'er and put the leash around the foot of a dresser in the bedroom. Just at a distance where he could not get up on the bed. He never barked or cried just curled up in his bed. I felt so guilty but it had to be done. He had no choice but to sleep in his own bed. I did this for about 4mos then gave him another chance at sleeping with me. Good luck hope this works for you. |
Yorkies love to sleep with their human. Read this in Yorkie info books. He just wants to be close to you. No advice on how to accomplish the opposite. Mine all sleep with us. King size bed. ~Joanne~ |
I think ARCHIE gave some good advice. I have 2 yorkies, and they were crate trained. If you have your little one in something with a door that can lock (such as a crate/kennel), you might want to try & put them in there. You might have to let them whine the first couple of times, but as long as you ignore that, they will eventually understand that they need to go night-night. Good luck! |

P.S. I forgot to mention that after 2wks I removed the harness and leash and he stayed in his bed by himself. He got the message but after 4months I allowed him back with me. They like to be near you and hearing you breathe is a comfort to them. It really is a good idea they sleep in their own beds so if you follow about the harness and leash hopefully he will get the point also. Make sure it's a cotton lightweight harness so he's comfortable. |
