How do I get her to stop this? Mahina is a pretty quick learner, if I teach her something she'll get it. I just don't know how to go about this situation as I don't think the firm "no" is working. If someone comes over, she goes ballastic... but we've figured out a way for her not to, it only works if someone warns us they're arriving. But, if this person comes to hug or even dare touch us (me or my mom) Mahina has the biggest fit! She'll jump up or on them, bark, and I think she's even daring to nip! This whole situation has got to stop, but I don't know how to go about it. Help please! Not only is it embarrassing, but I don't need anyone getting bit by her! |
You need some buddies to help you desensitize her. Have someone come over, and have them approach the threshold where she starts to get upset. Praise her lavishly while they approach, as this may calm her a bit. Have the person throw treats in her direction, so she has to "Find It" and focus on something else. You want to keep her on the edge where she is uncomfortable, but not ballistic. If she starts to freak out, clap your hands, say NO, and put her in another room for a bit, until she calms down. Then take her out, and start again. If she shows improvement and stays calmer for longer, or as people get closer to her, make sure to treat and praise even more. Also, dogs find your back much less threatening, so you can try having your friend "back into" you -- this may help if she believes this person is threatening you. It may not have an effect if she is "resource guarding" you, but it is worth a try. Repeat, repeat, repeat, with different friends if possible. Good luck! :) |
Forgot to mention, have her in a sit/down while this is happening. If your mom can hold her while you and a friend do this exercise, or vice versa, so much the better. The goal is to keep her calm - so make sure all the humans keep calm, use slow movements, etc. |
I usually put Baxter in his crate when I know someone is coming or should be there soon. Then let him out after the initial excitement is over and people are sitting. I suppose this isn't teaching him anything, but makes it easier and saves embarrassment if necessary. |
Quicksilver - Thank's for the great tips, I'm going to try this, hopefully this weekend and see if I can get it to work. I know it'll take more than a day but it's a start. Baxter - I don't crate her, so that I wouldn't be an option. But to greet people I just pick her up and let them smell her. I think everyone's less intimidating if she's more on there level. |
