And to the Basement we go... Hello everyone! Not having much luck with Yates at night. I put him in his pen and he just barks...the whole entire night....seriously! I don't understand how he still has a voice. After 6 hours and for the chance of one hour of sleep, we took him out of his pen. I know, I know bad bad bad! I am pregnant and I need my sleep. I live in a row home in Philadelphia. We have a finished basement, upstairs and a third floor with our bedrooms and bathroom on it. Tonight is going to be the first night that we are going to put Yates down in the basement in his pen at night. This way, if he's barking, hopefully we wont' hear it. Also, he sleeps all day. Sometimes I take him to work and he sleeps while he is here. No wonder he is up all night. Any ideas on helping me switch his schedule? Thanks |
Exercise, exercise, exercise! Plain and simple. :) You say he's sleeping a lot during the day... don't allow it so much ;) Take him for a 45min-1 hour walk a day at least. Play a game of fetch inside with him or "hide and seek" or come up with fun games to play indoors with him so he drains his energy. He sounds like he is totally bored. A tired dog makes for a good dog! I guarantee you with some proper exercise, he will sleep through the night. Take him for a brisk walk before bed- time. |
Yes, try to keep him more active during the day!! It will help! |
I agree, exercise during the day, don't allow so many naps. And I bet that after about a week or so of being completely ignored at night (and hopefully you can't hear him down there so you get some sleep) he'll stop. We put our pup in his pen at night in the kitchen. With our a/c and a white noise machine we barely heard him. It took him a week of barking/whining off and on during the night and now he knows the drill and doesn't make a peep until the morning. |
also try covering his crate with a blanket...that sometimes work! |
I must say that I got a wonderful night of sleep last night. Didn't hear Yates at all. DH got up at 6 to get ready for work and took Yates for a walk around the block. He did use his pee pee pads at night which is good but he also went pee and poo when DH took him for is walk before walk. Yea! Yates!!! I must admit, it was so hard to have him in the basement last night but it was for his own good. And it seemed like it wasnt an issue. I will update more in the next couple days. Oh..we do take Yates on walks. He gets about 4-5 10 minute walks during the work week. I am going to try to take him on a longer walk before bed though.. I don't know how I should keep him up. When he wants to sleep, he wants to sleep. I will pick him up to wake him and pet him and off to sleep he goes again. If I try to throw a ball or one of his toys to him he just looks at me and back to bed he goes... |
Try giving him something to chew on, like a Kong stuffed with frozen peanut butter or cream cheese. He won't sleep through that. When Loki was a puppy we didn't allow naps after 7pm LOL Seriously, if they sleep all day they will be up all night. This is NOT forever. My two are 3&4 and they sleep all day AND night :) |
Hehe ... you said that you were pregnant? Well just like if your new baby had its days and nights mixed up you'd try to keep the baby awake more during the day so you can get a better nights sleep Same difference here |
