11 week old puppy - teething already? I have had my 11 week old yorkie (Stella) for a bit less than a week now and I am having some issues with biting already. I am a first time puppy owner and am wondering if 11 weeks is kind of early for teething?? She tries to bit my hands, feet, and ankles. At night she barely sleeps...she is too busy chewing her blanket, toys, her crate bars, and even her collar!! Is this normal at this age? I am a little nervous as I am not comfortable around her when she is biting at me. It freaks me out but I try not to show fear. When I 'yelp' I actually mean it. lol. Please tell me this is normal and that it eventually gets better. Thanks! :aimeeyork |
Hi. I can tell you that I am having the same problems with my pup He is now 5 months old and he was Biting etc. from 8 weeks old. It is mainly a teething problem...first teeth then cutting their second teeth etc. Mine finds my hands toes. etc. more exciting than his toys..but like me you must be firm with the pup. It will get better...I am saying a definate "No" each time he nips me etc. and put him down and ignore him for a short while. Mine seems to be worse when he gets really excited when playing with toys..and sometimes turns his attention..and teeth on me..so I then stop playing and walk away. I think if you look back at a lot of previous postings..you and I are not alone with this problem...so I hope it gets better for you too. Absolutely she is teething But the biting part is something you'll have to deal with Give her lots of chew toys for her to chew on But you need to make it known that you are NOT one of her toys When you play with a puppy and they get rough and bite Do not scold and continue to play They think then that it's OK to bite and your scolding is like the sound of a squeaky toy You say NO! or OW! and get up and go away and just leave ... don't hand her a chewy or a toy then you are rewarding her for biting you |
Thank you both for your comments! Stella is actually really quick to learn but for some reason this is not sinking in with her. I think it is b/c I am kind of timid when it comes to her biting. I try to stop playing with her when she bits but she just continues playing without my attention. She is biting everything but biting me and my pants/ankles is what bothers me most! I hope I do not have to put up with this for a year or more! I want to stop it now. I am going to puppy classes soon so I hope they address this. The thing that bothers me most is that while I am petting her she reaches her head back to bite at my hand. Thanks again for your comments...I will just keep trying and using my patience :cool: |
Omg! I thought that I was the only one going through this as well. My Fitch who is 11weeks today bites me and my daughter all the time. I know that everyone says that it's teething but I feel as if there is a difference between teething and just flat out biting. When I'm trying to pet him he turns his head back and bites me. |
You have to remember that when dogs play, they bite each other, this is how puppies play. Dogs think of this as playing with us too, not being mean. Young puppies have very sharp teeth so this hurts. All puppies do this, so you are not alone. You just have to teach them that when playing with you, biting is not okay. It was really hard with my second pup because it was confusing that he was aloud to play bite my other dog, but not us. What I do when he bites is say no, and firmly, but not too rough, grab and close his muzzle and say "no bite". They don't like that, so if you are consistent, it shouldn't take too long for them to learn! |
