My pup HATES car rides! My puppy is only 8 weeks old but whenever we take a car ride, even like a short one to the gas station, he can't sit still. He just whines and whines constantly until we stop. We cover the seats and floor with a lot of blankets and put his bed on the seat. We also bring a ton of toys but nothing seems to appease him! I usually sit in the back with him.. and he will jump on me and climb up on my shoulders and sit between my neck and the seat.. It drives me crazy! I dont know if this is normal, and if he will outgrow it, but we are having a family reunion this weekend and we have to bring him with because we have no one else to watch him! I thought that if we took a few short trips out he would get used to it but he still despises being in the car. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do? Thanks, I appreciate it! |
car rides Have u tried putting the little one in a crate with the door opening next to u on the back seat so that u can pet him? Also putting some Nutrical on your finger in his mouth or some other small treat to calm him. I have been through this and it is hard! Good Luck! |
My yorkie thinks she is a parrot and is only content in the car when riding on my shoulder!! We have worked with her and now she'll lay down in her kennel. It takes time and experience. We travel constantly and she is getting pretty skilled at her car routine! |
Thanks for the suggestions! We have a kennel I just never thought to use it for traveling but I will definitely try that. Hopefully he will relax in the crate because he won't be moving around so much on the bumpy roads!.. Thanks again. |
You could also get a car seat so he can see out the window that may help |
Since he's only 8 wks old it's most likely that it's a scary situation for him He's getting overwhelmed by all the new sights and sounds * 8 weeks is very young to be taking him out anyway If you have to take him say to the vet put him in a carry all with a blanket so he feels secure and one that has a window so he can see you |
Your situation reminded me of Sasha at that age, she use to do the same things! not stay still, climb to my shoulders, shake like a chihuahua. but I didn't like it so much when she used to climb to my shoulders, especially if I was driving. now she is older (9months) and she loves the car rides to stick her head out the window and feel the wind. It will stop with time but I think the snoozer car seat or a small kennel is great idea. It will be more secure for your yorkie in case of a car accident and the airbags deploy. below is a link for the snoozer car seat Pet Car Seat: Pet Car Booster Seat Lookout for Small Dogs at PETCO |
Jackson was very much like this. I got him at 9 weeks of age and I thought he would NEVER like the car, he used to cry/whine/whatever the entire time. After just a few weeks of practicing small rides with him and allowing him out of his crate (I got a buckle that goes into the seatbelt now) He LOVES car rides. Absolutely loves them. So, I think some dogs just get used to it and some never enjoy car rides. He sticks his out of the crack in the window and loves the wind, he looks so cute! |
My Bailey is 15 weeks and loves the car...if he can sit on my lap! He whines the entire time if he is in his kennel:rolleyes: |
The best of all situations is to have a safety seat. I have 3 Snoozer brand seats....2 larger and 1 small. They are high enough that the doggie can look out. One of mine goes crazy if I put her on the passenger seat, but in her safety seat she is very calm. I would not recommend that any pet be loose in moving vehicle. It is a distraction and if you do have an accident, there is a chance that your beloved pet will fly around in the vehicle and be severely injured or even killed. An air bag going off has the potential to instantly kill your pet even though you are in a minor traffic accident. It has happened that pets has escaped from the vehicle and been lost. Some owners have been blessed enough to find their lost pet. I have been told by local police officers that they will not help an accident victim if there is an unrestrained dog in the car until animal control has been called. As you can see, there are many safety issues that can be addressed by just using a safety seat. Somewhere on YT someone gave instructions on making your own pet safety seat. There are leashes that connect to a car's seat belt that hook onto a harness. So if cost is an issue, there are ways of getting around it. It has been mentioned that your baby is too young to be outside your home other than go to the vet. Vaccinations need to be given before your furbaby is exposed to the big world. |
