determined NOT to have a spoiled baby! UUUGGGRRHHH! Bella-Shai has been given a very long leash so to say... over the past two days... she has been trying my very very large amount of patience! I think that maybe I have not been showing her who exactly is boss.... bad mistake on my part! I read somewhere that during very early puppyhood that you can "break their spirit" and they will not be a confident dog. Well, maybe I shouldn't have taken that to heart! Now she is confused when Mommy flips out when she chews through 3 NOT 2 but 3 pee pads in a matter of 5 minutes all while I am trying to get myself and two children out of the door.... she doesn't pull this stuff when my husband is around.... JUST ME!!!! Now she is spending the next 3 hours in her crate instead of running around the play-yard while I am away! I feel like a big-ole meanie! HELP! Does this "terrible" stage pass?????? She was an angel up until Sunday!!!!! (sort of) :) |
Rest assured...this too shall pass. :) I feel like I am an expert with puppies who chew pee pee pads :D She'll outgrow it...I promise!!! :) |
Proper discipline will NOT break their spirit. Truly spoiled dogs end up in rescue many times because the owners can't deal with the behavior of the dog THEY raised. That being said...chewing and destruction are normal behaviors and it's your job to direct them to the Good chews and restrict them from the Bad ones. Pee pads are popular and I know a lot of people here use them with the frames that supposedly prevent shredding. I have never been a fan, my kids delighted in turning the things into 'snow'. I use the washable pish pads that are (so far) beyond their destructive capabilities. Stick with tough love and your girl will delight you in the end. |
I know alot of people here have had success with pee pads, but I personally have never met a dog who didn't shred them. If this is her only bad behavior, I wouldn't worry too much. |
:p Please meet Toto .... evidently the only Yorkie to never shread a pad!! :) Truly she hasn't ... and I know it just has to be "dumb luck"!! I have heard over & over about pad shredding, but I swear she has never done it. She did go through a period when she was a tiny little girl and she would drag it out of her X-pen! Never tore it, just moved it!! The only thing we did to stop this was bought one of those little frames with the red/yellow flower thing on each corner ... she couldn't get the frame out of the pen so she gave up on dragging!! :p One thing we did do from "day one" ... was make sure she always had a supply of "chewing" things handy! Every time she tried to do anything with that mouth instead of eat, we stuck something "chewable" in her mouth. Didn't take her long and when she got that chew urge, she would dig through her toys and find the proper thing to chew on ... still does!! Another "truth" about Toto [2 yrs. old], she has never, ever chewed on anything that doesn't belong to her and never destroyed any of her things .... with the exception of her all time favorite, a little scrap of paper!! That's her favorite "no-no thing" and you accidentally drop a piece, you better be real fast to grab it up ... the Toto "2 second rule applies"!! ;) |
Luckily, Desi has never chewed or shredded a pad . Of course, no other paper should ever be within her reach because that she'll shred. But never her pad.. |
My dogs will always shred paperr. I only have chew sticks fo them to chew on. |
LOL she knew that you where leaving and she didn't tell you that you could go silly. Heather |

on a flannel back plastic tablecloth and thats it. She is not a chewer either. Just kidding about being the second - I know lots of people whose dogs have never shread them. They do say to be very careful and not to use them with young pups because they could choke on them. The washable ones that Sylvan mentioned would be better at a young age. |
 I'm glad to hear there are others!! :) We credit Toto's being such a good girl to providing her so many different chew things and being diligent! Any time she even "looked like" she wanted to put her little mouth on anything, we would hand her a chew thing. :p I never, ever blamed her for wanting to chew ... cutting those little teeth was tough! She drooled like a baby ... her little chest stayed wet until she finished teething!! ;) |
toby has never chewed his pad  lol, i didnt know he was supposed to did i do something wrong in training him? :p toby has always known who is boss...... i never gave him an inch of leniancy when he did something wrong, now though..... whenever i yell (i can even be yelling at the cat......) he will crouch ... he has never liked it when i yell, but hey, i cant help it.... hes gotten better though, he usually knows what i am screaming about and it is usually NOT him |
