won't walk in neighborhood Cooper loves to walk on the beach. He loves to go for hikes. But he will NOT walk around the neighborhood! We live in an unincorporated area and our streets do not have sidewalks. I thought perhaps he was scared of the parked cars. However, there are times when he will walk a few yards and not show any reaction to the cars. Does anyone else experience this with their dogs? I feel badly because I kind of live in boonies. There are no parks nearby and the beach is kind of a trek. Basically, Cooper would get a lot more exercise if he would walk around the block!!!! |
Aww... I would rather walk at the beach too! I live rural and we just run around our land ~ wish I could help you. |
Just got back from a walk and ended up carrying Cooper 95% of the way. I know that picking him up is not the best way to handle the situation. But he sits down and refuses to move an inch. I have a JRT and Cooper will follow him anywhere...except when walking around the block. Ugh! |
Why don't you try enticing him with treats or a toy he particularly likes to get him motivated little bit at a time. It might work :D |
I think the treat idea is a great one. Sometimes Bella does that where she just sits and won't move forward on our walks (she usually loves walking in the neighborhood, but on occasion she's stubborn). I always carry treats on walks to reward her when she potties. She knows the command "touch" where I hold my fist out and she comes and touches it with her nose. So I use that a couple times to get her moving and then she just gets into the walk and I don't have any more trouble. Bella looks forward to a walks as a time when she will get treats cause she know I always carry them- I also treat or praise her for sitting by me when I stop. Good luck :) |

And also you can try the double leash and see if he'll try fallow the other dog a little more. It work for me when I train puppies to walk on leash. |
My Maddie doesn't like to walk on concrete. Whenever I take her to the park so walks in the grass and not on the sidewalk. She won't even go on the tile in the house...maybe that is the problem? Any fixes for not wanting to walk on concrete would be helpful if you have any! :) |

Well, we're off to the beach today so Cooper will be able to get some exercise in. |
I have just the opposite problem. Nolee does not like the sand. He will not walk on. Good thing I don't live near the beach. Only go for vacation! Hope you can get Cooper to walk in the neighborhood for you! |
