anyone tried contronella bark collar? Help! My little yorkshire TERROR, Kingston, barks so much! it drives us nuts. He is only 4 months and we have had him for a little over 1 month. What can we do?!? we use the spray bottle and it works, its just that he is too fast for us sometimes and i dont want to spray him if he stops when i start to walk over to the back door, because then he has stopped barking. Anyone tried the citronella spray bark collar? do they have sizes for a 6 pound yorkie? |
i am in aus.and i use it and work.with my maltese who is 5.5 pounds. i used only when i took her for walk or ride the bike.she use to bark so bad.now she not.and not need to use it again. |
They work! I used the citronella collar with Bula when he would bark in the car. After the first time it squirted, he stopped barking. He seemed to understand that he shouldn't bark when wearing the collar, and now I just leave the collar next to him in his car seat and that does the trick! He really caught on! My neighbors overused it with thei dog (they left it on all day) and he just got used to it. You should pick a time when the barking is worst and work on that first. Good luck!!!!! |

Try to find out WHY he is barking in the first place, and address the issue. Sometimes they are just trying to tell you something and you are not understanding. That makes them frustrated and that's why they bark. Try to get him to redirect his energy onto something else. |
I have used one (not my favorite idea, but just telling her to stop, etc. does not work). Anyway, I put it on her and then got the broom out. She went into her barking frenzy and all the collar did was make it worse. Maybe she thought the broom was spraying her? And now she really does have a reason to be scared of it... I don't think they are inhumane but, in my opinion, it's not a good training method in most cases... |
Keep in mind that the spray is supposed to be extremely unpleasant for dogs, so it is a little harsh if you haven't tried other methods. I found pennies in a can to be extremely effective. |
I tried it on my schnauzer and poodle a while back. The poodle would bark and the schnauzer would get the squirt, poor thing. But it was funny I think my poodle had a riot with that one lol. It would really scare my schnauzer, she would go down and freeze there. Sometimes they would bark their head off and no squirts. I gave a collar to my son so he could try on his dog and he didn't have much more luck. Maybe some people had success but for me it didn't do well. |

Same thing with the water spray bottle. |
Yes, if a dog had a major barking problem, I would consider it, it just wouldn't be the first thing I'd try, and it wasn't with you either. Have you tried bigger coins in a coffee can? That makes a much louder noise. |
We've considered using that collar. We use the coins in the can and the spray bottle along with a few other training agents our trainer has given us. |
Pennys in a can can be just as upsetting to some dogs and makes them extremely flighty. Spray bottles of water makes it or can make it harder to use sprays of any kind. Using an interupor is great but you need to teach them what you want as well as just stopping the event. Best bet is to teach speak and shh and get them on a cue. instead of a spray collar a beep one that is high pitched may work. JL |
Clinical studies conducted by the College of Veterinary medicine of Cornell University have proven that Spray Bark Collars are TWICE as effective as shock collars! Sonic dog barking collars are virtually ineffective compared to spray. |
