Does anyone konw how to get a puppy to "drop it" ?
 

Bailey is always running away from me with something in his mouth, he knows he shouldn't have it and this makes him run from me faster! How do you get your puppy to drop something? Any help would be appreciated, Bailey actually found a thumb tack yesterday, and was running around with it in his mouth, it really upset me.

Scary! Haven't had anything as serious as a thumbtack but thats my worst nightmare. If he gets something really dangerous in his mouth. I can't get him to drop it and have to engage in a very dangerous chase with him. Help would be appreciated here as well.

This is what we are working on now..hope it works for you. Give your puppy an item such as a sock.. (not one of his toys yet) and let him play with it. Say, "drop it" and then wave food under his nose. When he drops it give him food and then give him the item back. The first time he drops it perfectly give him twice as much food. One thing we learned is that when he had something dangerous in his mouth or really anything we didn't want him to have was not to chase after him. Initially we chased after him and this became a very fun game for him which he usually won bc he is super fast. So no we act like we don't care...and casually block him off with an expen and then walk and take it. He is starting to understand the "drop it" now and runs to get his treat each time. Good luck!

The way we do it is if Uni has something she isn't supposed to have, we will call her name sternly "UNI!" She knows she in in trouble and will stop in her tracks. It is a good idea to have a nickname that you call him when he is being good, and then another name when he is in trouble. That was he can hear the "bad boy" name, and recognize the tone of your voice. We usually call her "Noonie" normally, but when she's in trouble, it's "Uni". Like when parents call their kids by their full name, or first and middle name, they know they are in trouble!

So anyway, we will call her sternly, she will freeze, ears back, tail down. THEN, we say "drop it". When you first start teaching this, you will have to gently take it out of his mouth yourself. Eventually they will drop on their own. The hard thing about teaching this IMO is that you can't really reward them after they've dropped b/c technically they are in trouble!

The reason he runs is b/c he thinks you are playing with him, and he doesn't realize what he has in his mouth is harmful. Since he is so young still, he might not even fully understand "no" or even what his name is. Take it one day at a time. He will get it soon, they are super smart dogs. In the meantime, just be extra careful with those thumbtacks. ;)
