I am about to go NUTS too. I have a beautiful home and I cannot have it ruined. Katy is 9 months old and knows to use her wee wee pad and will do it consistently for a while and them BOOM she will go on an oriental rug or the floor. I love her dearly but this a new home and cannot deal with MESS like that. I do not want odors in the house. I think I am going to have her on her leash whenever she is not in her ex pen.

Have you tried putting him in the bathroom with wee wee pads on the floor when you're not home? I can't leave my two monkeys loose when at work because I'd end up with little surprises everywhere...

Personally, I see many more issues of dogs having house training issues who use pee pads. I've never heard of this many dogs not being housebroken until joining this site, lol. I know Yorkies are notoriously hard to house break and even if you out door train them, they may have accidents. But I think if you're able to let them out into a grassy yard area, it's a lot easier and let's them know NO pee in the house at ALL.

Jackson is 100% outdoor trained (never used pee pads) and he has been allowed free roam in the house since 5 months old. He's now 10 months old. He WILL still have an accident occasionally but it's very rare - I'd say it's down to once a month, if that. He never goes pee/poop when I'm not home though which is the funny thing. He's totally trustworthy when he's home alone, it's when I'm home he has accidents. But he goes and waits by the door and barks when he has to go. The last accident he had with about 2 weeks ago and he pooped upstairs, it was totally my fault. I knew he hadn't been to the bathroom yet but I allowed him upstairs with me anyways and I ignored his signs and he went on the floor. My fault. But anyways, my point - if you can, I'd try outdoor training so they know peeing/pooping inside is not good in general. Dogs confuse pads with rugs and it just becomes a mess.

I recently got a 2 year old female yorkie from a breeder that kept her crated all the time. Crate training is not an option, she WILL poop/pee where she sleeps.
I've seen some progress, when I got her she was not used to grass or going up/down steps. She's fine with both now. She is good about peeing outside but pooping outside is spotty. She can hold it all night, then turn around & poop if I leave her for 20 minutes. I have hardwood floors so I don't mind picking up a pile of poo if need be, but twice now she's pooped in a confined room near the door, then ran all through it caking it onto the floor. Also jumped on the walls, packing the poo onto it. I will need to paint the laundry room wall at some point, I was able to get it off my bedroom wall.
Anyone else had this issue of them running through the poo & tracking it around? This I have zero patience for. While I've seen some progress in less than 2 weeks, I know I will not have the patience to face this for months, like I've been reading on many posts here. Just curious if anyone else has faced this.

It sounds like your best option would be an xpen. If it's really unbearable, maybe do diapers - you'll have cleanup, but it will just be on the dog.

I don't want to upset you, but it sounds like she came from a mill situation - pooping in her crate, unfamiliar with grass and stairs are classic signs. You can train her to use her crate, but you have to be really, really dedicated. Like, take her out every 1-2 hours, EVEN at night. If you cannot have both eyes on her, she needs to be confined.

Fortunately, this hyper-vigilance is usually only necessary for a week or so. I would recommend that you do try to crate train her, since you may need that for going to the vet, boarding, traveling, etc.

Sure, leashing her to you is a great way to keep an eye on her. How often is she having accidents? You may want to train her to be outside only, or confine her to just one or two room until she is totally trustworthy.

this all sounds so scary!! my boy is just 10 weeks but i am due in 2 months...and i won't have the time or strength to keep an eye on him 24/7 while taking care of my 15 month old boy, a new baby, house and husband! i think i bit more than i could chew.

does it really take that long to potty train them? why do they regress?

Jackson is 10 months old and I still consider him 99% housetrained because he TOTALLY knows where to go (he's outside only) but there is still the occasional accidents... it's gotten down to once a month though approx. Granted, most of the time I consider it my own fault because I give him a lot of freedom but most of the time he's very good and deserves it so I guess I kinda just excuse the few slip ups. In general, I think smaller dogs are harder to house train. I had a Golden and a German shepherd who were housetraned in a week. My dad has two small dogs - same thing, accidents every once in a while still and they're almost 2 years old.

I am fully convinced that the problem is the wee wee pads. I have never had a problem with housebreaking the way that I have with my two. I knew better than to have wee wee pads in the house but did it because one of my pups was trained to go on them....HUGE MISTAKE. I'm sure that if I had done without the wee wee pads the problem wouldn't be in existence today. I spoke to my trainer and she also feels the same way about wee wee pads. Dogs should never be able to go to the bathroom indoors, it just confuses them. If they're never able to go indoors the message is clear and less accidents. I am so afraid of getting rid of them though! A part of me feels like it saves my floor most of the time but then again I think it may be causing the accidents some of the time. I'm pregnant too so I need to make a power move soon...just scared to...
