Any advice on adopting an older yorkie puppy (6 months old)?

I am thinking of getting an older puppy who has not been given any training
(lived in a kennel) who is now a show dog reject. Would this be a harder puppy to train and house break? Would the puppy be less likely to bond with us?
If anyone has advice or experiences to share, would love the info. I need to know if it would be better to wait to get a younger puppy who I can start the training earlier with and shape them into our home's routines.

mmmmmm... I am for sure not an expert but I can tell you my experience my first furbaby Bentley I got him when he was a lil bit over 6 months.. and he was not potty trained nor he knew any commands... it took me over 3 weeks to teach him the commands and to be potty trained.. it takes time and alot of dedication I would say... nothing is impossible :rolleyes: ....

I'm a big fan of getting older animals! The only thing I think is that six months can be a tough age - it's the start of many dogs' "teenager" years. However, I would assume he's housebroken if he's coming from a show background, and that is by far and away the hardest thing to train.

Also, at six months old, you know what the dog is going to look like, how big it is going to be, AND it can hold its bladder all night. Young pups are a handful.

I got a dog at two years old and we are bonded like glue. A six month old dog should not have any bonding issues. S/he will probably be very greatful to have a new life with a loving family who wants to train him/her!

I got my yorkie at 9 months of age and couldn't be happier. If you have patience and time, I say go for it! Most people want the cute little puppies, I think it's great when someone gets a older one!

A few weeks ago I started a thread about Rescue/Rehome yorkies and it has really taken off! :) You should takr a look through all of the wonderful members and their stories if you have some time and a great big box of Kleenex. ;) After you read all of these great stories I am positive you will not have any question that this little guy will be the love of your life

I love teenagers and prefer it that way. Kissy was the only one that i had from a puppy. 3 of my other girls were around 10-12 months old when i got them. Meiah was almost 3 years old. I wouldn't have it any other way now. I know what i am getting and they are through all the chewing stages for the most part. Potty training is no different for an older one than a younger one except they can hold it a little longer.
Good luck! You won't regret it!! None of mine had a problem bonding with us or their sisters!!

Glad to hear good feedback on getting an older yorkie.

This puppy is not house broken since it was raised in a kennel with a doggie door to the outside run of the kennel (sleeps in a 2X3 area with a pee-pad too), so I think house breaking will be a challenge (but i am willing to do the work!)
I am happy to hear that the puppy should bond with us as much as a young puppy would.

I have adopted three boys who were all around the age of nine months... who came from show breeders: all from a kennel situation yet one did live in the breeders house but still did not have free run of house.

One did not sell as a young puppy and did not have the proper coat for breeding.

One was a show dog whose adult teeth came in crooked and ended his career

The third one was held back for showing but ended up with health issues...

All three of them are pretty well trained but it did take some time to get them there as they were use to going in their "kennels" and had no formal training... I had them neutered as soon as I got them and that helped a great deal with any marking...till they were completley trained they wore belly bands.... now they go to the door to be let out..... one does a cute dance waiting till I open the slider door to the fenced in yard...

They are very bonded and attacted to me ...and infact I think sometimes more bonded and attached then my Tae who I bought when he was only 8 weeks old..he is now 12 years old.... I bought Tae in the winter so he took a long time to train to go outside because it was too cold out to have him out for long periods of time....

I don't think I would ever get a young puppy again.... I love the age I got my boys at.... and they truly are great boys and very well socialized.... one would never know I have not had them since they were very young... I just lucked out and did not have to go threw the chewing stage and not being able to hold their bladders all night :-)

We got Rhianna when she was 6 months old . . .seemed nobody wanted her . . :confused: I wanted an older puppy because Brody was almost 2 at the time and I didn't want to go through the 10 week old puppy phase again. And I felt the transition to her becoming Brody's pal would of been easier than bringing a small little one into our home.

She adapted to us immediately! She was just grateful to be part of a family I think . . .I think she felt rescued in a way . . .She wasn't housebroken but got used to the pee pad in a matter of days. She really is smart! Her and Brody became best buddies in a short time . . .I wouldn't of wanted it any other way.

I got Pixie from a show breeder at 13 months she was use to being in a large run at the breeders basement with newspaper down. She is not my best trained dog but that is also my fault for treating her as an adult when I got her and not properly confining her. I would probably only get an older dog from now on. She bonded right away and Iknew exactly what I was getting and she never went through the chewing phase or biting. She is great except for a little lax in her pottying, but again that just takes training. I would go for it.

I got Madison at a week under 6 mos. she wasn't in a kennel she had access to a kitchen area and a deck. THerefore, she could potty either place. grooooooss!!!
Anyways it took me about 3 mos to get her totally trust worthy with no accidents ever in the house. Although she "got" going potty outside right away.
I was overall very blessed to add her to my life and she's been such a joy. and Lexie my 5 yr old maltese now has a sister :)

I say if the dog melts your heart get it!
