Pee Pad training in X pen question So after almost a year of talking/researching it, we are finally getting ready to bring home our first Yorkie puppy (next Friday)! He'll be 10 weeks old when we get him so I know potty training will be tough but we've decided to train him on pee pads in an x-pen, no crates, no outdoors. My question (and it may be really stupid), do I just put one pad down in the pen at a time or do I line half of the pen with pads? I see a lot posts about pad(s) with a s so I'm just not sure  Also, how often do you change the pads if they just pee on them? What are the best pad brands? Thanks in advance! |
What I did was put the crate inside the playpen and cover the entire floor with pads. Little by little I removed a pad until she was left with only 1 pad. If she is having accidents, go back to putting more pads.. She will eventually knows she has to go on the pad. Praise him/her everytime you see him/her going on the pad. Right now I only leave 1 pad, she sometimes misses the pad, so once in a while I leave 2 pads. I change them when I get home from work. Sometimes some dogs will not like a dirty pad and will not pee or poop on a dirty pad. So it really depends on your dog. I purchase the pads from Target for a very reasonable price. I dont recall the name, but I have only been able to find them at Target. They come in a white and blue bag. Hope this helps. :) |
I forgot to mention I leave the crate door open, so that she can sleep in there during the day, and so she can come in and out of the crate as she wishes. |

How long do you wait before you start removing the pads one at a time? Like one a week? Or do they start going in the same area? This is very helpful! |
Oh I was thinking about doing this exact thing with Toby but I wasn't sure about crate size or xpen size...does anyone recommend any sizes or brands? Thank you rmt5001 for asking this question! |
I'm at work but I think we have the Superyard XT? I just googled it and it's 18 1/2 sq. ft of space. The sides are 26in high. It's actually made for babies so it should be sturdy enough for a pup :aimeeyork |

I went with a good two weeks until I started to remove the first pad and then a week after that and so on until we were left with one pad at the end of the xpen. Sometimes I had to start to add more pads since she would miss or pee on her blanket, but now she is perfect. She wont poop on the pad though....she has an issue of having her poop near her. She holds it until we walk her or she poops early in the morning and cries for us to come and clean it up. |
