Yorkie not getting along with other pet I am new to this message board and a new Yorkie owner. I adopted Jacob this weekend, but he is not getting along with my miniature Schnauzer (Pari). When you try to pet Pari, Jacob will come over and try to bite Pari and scare him away. Has anyone had this problem while introducing your new Yorkie to your other pets? Any help would be appreciated. |
First I would like to welcome you to YT...as for the not getting along, be paitent and give it some time. I am sure it will all work out. |
How old is Jacob ? |
Let them work it out each one is trying to be top dog and you have to allow them to work it out between themselves. Unless it looks like someone is going to get hurt, butt out. Sometimes my two boys act like they are going to tear each others heads off, but I stay out of it, when one has had enough, they back off. Funny thing is it is the littlest one that rules. Be patient, a few days is not enough time to work out what is going to be a long term complicated relationship. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Please give your babies a little time...they'll get it together. We already had a 9 month old Yorkie and a couple weeks ago we brought home a 3 1/2 month old Yorkie. They were pretty squirrelly at first but after about 4 days things really settled down. They're best buddies now and you can't take one without the other! |
I have two yorkies that duke it out daily. I don't know how to get them to quit. If one has a toy, the other will come and take it away...then the fight is on! They wrestle, growl, bark and chase all through the house! I have to break it up all the time for fear they're going to hurt each other. They sound vicious. In fact, the puppy has a skinned chin and a skinned knee, and he's the biggest of the two!! |
Hi and welcome to Yorkie Talk!! You do need to realize that dogs are pack animals and they love having other dogs in their family. They learn things from other dogs that they cannot get from people!! There is an alpha dog in the pack and you need to let them figure out who that is while always realizing that you are the ultimate alpha" and you control everyone in the Pack, including the alpha so if you don't tolerate aggression then even the alpha will not be allowed to use it. |
Thank you for post Thanks to everyone who replied to my post. They give me encouragement. Jacob is 7 months old (we just got him). |
They need to respect each other's space A suggestion: When you separate them, keep them both at arms length from each other. As your doing that tell them NO! be nice! Be firm in your tone while separating them. Then tell them NO! be nice in a gentle tone. Then stay with them while they are separated. Let there be silence between each time you say NO! be nice, to give them time to take in what you have said. BE consistant in doing this everytime they attack each other. They must learn respect for other animals including you. You need to show them who is in control. Just don't be loud like them, be firm...stick to it. I guarentee it will work. My old Cat set in her ways, now gets along with yorkie. They are in love! Well they have there moments, but they are both safe. Good luck! Now can anyone help me with my dog lifting his leg and peeing everywhere. :animal36 |
