lol my moms yorkie did this.. we were chasing him for hours.. it took 3 of us.. and he would come up to us where we think we could grab him and then he'd take off again lol.. little fart.. I don't even bother letting mine out of the house without a leash.. way too scared of not being able to catch them. Once my older.. 12 lb yorkie ran outside when my family was here, he ran around my aunts car, I was right behind him.. and my smallest yorkie took out after me.. benji (12 lb yorkie) darted toward the door after running around the car, then chloe (smallest yorkie) took one more lap around the car and then darted toward the door.. they just did it to test me. |
Beware of the swatter!!!! Quote:
Too funny!!!! :D :D I've never hit any of my pets very hard either with the fly swatter but let me tell you something... All I have to do is show it to them and they stop dead in their tracks.... ;) :) |
OMG I was laughing so hard when I read that....but I feel your pain....I too have ran down the street in my Pj's not a good sight as everyone knows "jenns dont run" but i did that time.......she has done it 3 times in 9 months so I guess it isnt THAT bad but still......I see other yorkies walking round town with no leach just trotting next to their mommys....makes me sad......I want to know where I can remove Gidget's batteries so she can simmer down.....brushing her hair is a effort.....she wants to play with the brush and when I give her one to play with she wants the one I am using I dont know why she just cant sit still. Do you know if classes work for non pupppy dogs? well she is 1 now.....But I have to so something......she needs to obey....she wont even let you pet her she just wants to flop around and jump and play..... |
Classes work for all dogs. You might have good luck with clicker training. |
What is clicker training? I have wondered that myself! |
That was too funny! I'm still laughing! They do love to test your patience. Gus up to this day loves to crap in the nextdoor neighbors lawn. No matter what I do there he goes. I have to get my sandles off and smak them together and he'll run home. I don't know what to do to make him stop. He just loves thier yard but only to crap on. |
OMG... Too funny, everyone running around their neighborhoods, chasing small dogs!! Been there, done ThAT! I do it for awhile and give up... the last time I just went and sat on the porch,,cause if you run after him, forget it! The last time my neighbor said " He's over here, want me to get him?" I said " Good Luck to ya!" He didn't do any better. Then when noone was chasing him,, he walks up to me on the porch,, like " why aren't you all worked up, yelling and chasing me?" So, I just got up and walked calmly in the house and he followed me... and hasn't done it since. |

It's really neat. I spent all night last night reading about it. You will want a professional to train you to it. It's opperant conditioning. It uses 100% positive rewards (something I believe strongly in the more I read). You use a clicker to "bookmark" the desired behavior. For example...Let's say that I am trying to train an untrained dog to sit. I watch the dog for a time. Eventually he will sit. When he does so, I give a click and a treat. When he sits again, click - treat. I keep repeating this until the dog is coming over to me and sitting to get a treat. After he knows what's getting the "click" and following treat, I name the action. "Sit." And when he sits, "click-treat". This method appears to be 100% foolproof and is used to train everything from cats to dolphins. Yes, they actually train cats to sit-stay-fetch in public, using this method. It really sounds amazing. It's also used to de-sensitize dogs to stimulus that stress them out. You train AWAY bad behavior using the clicker. Seperation, barking, and agression all seem treatable using this method. This is the funniest post I've read since joining. |
hahaha. Dontcha hate when the little boogers do that? Kelsey will escape sometimes and run around in circles and think I'm playing a game, or I'll accidently drop her leash and she'll hear it hit the ground and start running..it's aweful! |
LMAO!!!! Had to read it twice! Once out loud to my step daughter!!! Oh, I know you were upset, but thanks for sharing it in such a way to give us all a good visual and an even better laugh! You're a good sport! :D |
Oh do I feel your pain!! I almost felt like putting Maddie for sale on ebay this weekend! Some days they can be just little devils!! Good luck! |
You'll do fine  [QUOTE=jenefor] Do you know if classes work for non pupppy dogs? well she is 1 now... Oh sure, in fact I think there are many more dogs in obedience training over 1 year old than in puppy training. Most people think they have this tiny puppy and they will certainly be able to handle it until they end up with alpha dog :) :D :p  Believe me we all have had the need of a trainer and obedience classes for our dogs at one time or another. Good Luck |

After reading these stories I'm really nervous about adopting a Yorkie. On my street, if my dog got out once he would be hit by a car and that would be it. I just don't know what to do. We want a little yorkie so bad but we can't do anything about our location. Our house is also near the extremley busy street. Any Advice? |
I am sure that a busy street is not a great place for any type of dog. You will just need to be extra careful. I am far from the yorkie expert that a lot of the great people on YT are, but just from my very limited experience with my puppy, she does not run after cars or take off from me. Any time a car drives by she stops and sits still. She is always on a leash, but she does not take off after cars. i just thought I would add that before you wrote off the possibility of getting a yorkie! They are such wonderful babies!!! |

:lol tears I had to read this one to my husband. he doesn't pay much attention to me when he is playing poker but this one got his attention. Ahia is the one here that will dash out the door if it is even sligltly open. we have chased her several times. I never knew yorkies could run so fast. :animal37 like a grayhound it was! truely. one good thing is that she will go directly to one particular neighbor's house. and wait there. they have a 3 yr old daughter (for some reason attracts animals, i tell her some day she will be a vet.) ever notice all the bad things start with 'men'.... menopause, etc. LOL |
The key is training and the come command is the most impotant behavior to tach a dog and it is absolutely necessary for their safety that they have that command down solid and come everytime they are called without hesitation. It is not hard to teach and should be reinforced daily. Yorkies love to learn and to please and training is a good thing for them. it makes them feel like they have a purpose and it teaches boundaries and limitations. Dogs are similar to children in the fact that they thrive when they have boundaries and limitations that they are aware of. |

Try putting a child safety gate in front of your door. They are easy to step over and will keep animals from being able to run out. |

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!! You are something else. This post made me laugh so hard I had tears in my eyes!!!!! :) |
I know you aren't suppose to spank and your told bla bla bla, but i had the same problem with sugar when she was little. I spanked her for running off too. Better than getting killed by some large dog or hit by a car. She hasn't done it since. She is three yrs old now and i haven't had to spank her since. I swear she knows half my vocabulary. she is so smart. she never runs out the door and when i pick up her leash she will walk under it for me to hook her. smartest doggie i have.No i don't make it a habit of spanking dogs. I just have to scold them and they mind. She was just a little extra spoilled and trying to run the house hold. She also left her little teeth prints on our furniture. |
Spanking my Yorkie One evening, I sat our little Buddy on my bed while I went to brush my teeth. He had been sleeping with me at night and we both enjoyed it alot. Anyway - I evidently took to long, he peed on my bed. When I came out of the bathroom and seen what he had done, I picked him up and gave me a lite spanking on his butt ( the 1st time ever). I looked at his face and I swear he had tears in his eyes and was crying. It broke my heart to say the least. I don't really know if Yorkies cry real tears, but it sure looked like it to me. Anyway, our Buddy is not here now, but we are getting a new little girl next week to try to replace him. |
Oh Cake, i'm so sorry about your little one. I didn't hardly spank sugar just patted her fat rump and scolded her really bad. She was the type when she got away she would make a game out of it. Got out of my sis-in-laws back yard and into both of the neighbors back yards. one of them had chows and the other had a rotty. about the time i would get close to her she would make a dive away from me. Me screaming her name like a maniac. lol I'm so glad those days are over. I always put a leash on her cause if she sees a squirrel or cat or anything strange in the yard she takes off after it, other than that she comes to me now. These little yorkies are exactly like little people to me. I love every single one of mine and they all have their own uneek personalities. I believe they cry , i know they pout. When my first yorkie died from kidney failure. I immediately bought sugar and they don't replace the other one but they find their own place in your heart .They really do fill a space in our hearts.People wouldn't believe the love i have for sugar. It's like she is my child. I have this bondage with her almost like a doggie soulmate. Sounds crazy don't it? |
Yorkie owners are the BEST! I must say when I first began to read this post, I completely indentified with it, and then the thought came to me... "OMG, someone is going to BASH this poor lady for hitting her dog!", and I began to read the replies hoping I was wrong. I am new here, but have been on many boards in my e-life. I know there are ALWAYS strongly opinionated people who are not shy about their posts just waiting to pounce on poor unsuspecting honest folks. HAPPILY I see that Yorkie owners are polite, sympathetic, and humorous people who support each other in their quests for happy and obedient pooches. Kudos, Yorkie owners, and double kudos to each and every one of you who replied on this thread!! I am so happy to be among you! |
Thank you for the feed back. Last Sat., we got our new little girl. Maggie Jo. You are so right. She is her own little self, totally different then Buddy with her likes and dislikes. But is very loved and getting pretty darn spoiled. CAKE |
Funny Post Man That was the funniest post I have ever read. She reminds me of my little Nephew of Chucky. They are so bad with the cutest face. |
