Biting and Barking when people walk towards the door!! Baxter is a 2 year old male. He is usually a very good boy, but whenever my husband, or a guest tries to walk towards the door to leave the house, or the stairs going to the 2nd floor(which are right next to the door), he turns into Kujo and starts barking like crazy and biting feet. He never does it to me, so I can assume its a resource guarding issue. Any have any suggestions on how to stop this? Ive been told to send him to a behavior specialist, but before I do that I want to see if I can fix this problem at home. |
That does sound like resource guarding. Is there possibly a dominance issue as well? Someone on YT recommended the book "Mine" to help with resource guarding, if you want to check that out. Other than that, I would recommend the usual for bad behavior. Practice with him on your lap and your husband leaving the room, and reward him if he is able to restrain himself. Keep him on a leash for this exercise so you can restrain him for bad behavior. You can also give him a special "place" he is supposed to go to on command, and train him to stay there while guests leave. Gentle corrections, positive reinforcement for desired behavior, and build up gradually. Good luck! :) |
Yes this is a form of resource guarding and can lead to other dominance related behaviors As an owner what you need to do is when someone goes to leave and you can even try and get a patient volunteer to help you with this when they get up you need to step in front of the dog and go ... NO! You have to block their way as you do this and even back the pup up as the person then walks to the door you stay between them Do not let the dog bark or lunge If he does the person sits and you start again |
