Wont Listen... Okay here it goes... Mandie is 9 months old and has recently started chewing and distroying any type of paper she can find. When you can catch her and tell her to "Stop and Drop it" she just looks at you and runs... After 5 or so minutes of chasing her you can finnaly corner her and take it away. So then I put her in her little time out spot but she doesnt always stay there...she thinks its a game. I dont know why she is doing this...never before have we had any problems. I'm wondering if it has something to do with her being home alone for a few hours in the day. It seems like she is trying to get back at us.. Because she crys and acts mopey when I leave her...I swear its not all day...just like 2-3 hours.. I dont know what to do... I am thinking about training classes at like petco or petsmart?? Are either of these a better place than the other??? Any suggestions???? |
Dogs like paper mainly because it rips and can be chewed on simple solution .... keep the paper away from her But you should always be able to stop your dog in its tracks esp when you think she has something dangerous |
Have you formally trained her on Leave It / Drop It? It sounds like she is having a grand old time, first with the paper, and then with you chasing her around the house. Thor loves kleenex, especially if it's used. If he gets bored, the waste basket is the first place he looks. If you haven't already, train her to Drop It / Leave It with a less valued item, and then work your way up to paper. Treat this like any other trick and reward her for performing the command correctly. If in a real life situation she runs away, try to slowly walk after her. When you reach her, sternly tell her NO and then give her a real time out, not an optional one - put her in the bathroom for a few minutes, or put her on a short leash and walk her around the house with you. As always, an ounce of prevention is usually worth a pound of cure. :) |
Oh, also: when in real life, if she obeys you, make sure to praise her and give her a treat. Always use positive reinforcement if possible. |
When my 'leave it' command doesn't work, I grab a squeaker toy & side track her with the toy. Have found it to work even with kleenex... her favorite. She can grab one of those out of my hand so quickly I can't believe it. She has responded very well with side tracking her. Works most every time. It's much easier than chasing her. She's way too fast for me. When you give a 'leave it' or similar command you need to make sure your voice is stern & that you mean it. It doesn't have to be all that loud, it just needs to sound like you mean it. That's no time for soft wimpy kissy-face kind of voice. Training classes are great, but only if you do your homework. It takes practice. Some things they learn very quickly, and others take a little longer. Just keep at it. |

As for the petsmart classes, I think they are kind of expensive, about $100 if I remember correctly? I think there are plenty of people here on YT that can give the same advice if not better, and it's free. :) |
