Urgent Help My wife recently became pregnant, and we now have an issue with our overly aggressive yorkshire terrier (almost 7 yrs old)... he is the sweetest to me and my wife, but will literally attack anyone who comes in the house...he will lunge after people and try to bite them outside as well. My wife's concern now is that the baby will be endangered by our very aggressive dog. She wants to get rid of the dog....i do not want this as an option. The only thing i can think about to protect our new child is to de-fang the dog and take out some of his teeth that can cause injury. What other options are there ? Is there medication to correct this type of behavior ? Has anyone out there gotten rid of their dog's teeth for this same reason ? |
first of all welcome to YT :) second... i feel so sorry for your situation... wow 7 years and then to think of departing .. i know it must be hard. I really dont have any advice i just wanted to say good luck. :( i hope you dont get rid of your baby and find a solution to your problem. im sure someone here will have advice for you |
Welcome to YT and my advice is call a trainer in your area and talk to them about your problem. Congraulation on you new arrival. |
I suggest you ask your vet for a behaviorist. An agressive dog is a serious problem and should be addressed quickly before the dog does something that will cause him to be harmed. |
Well I would like to say a very warm welcome to yorkietalk. Please dont take what I am going to say the wrong way.I was quite shocked reading your post as I cant understand why when some people have problems with their dogs the first thing they think of is to get rid of them and for people like me whos dogs are like their children the first thing I would do is like you ask for advice on yorkietalk and then perhaps an animal behaviourist I can totally understand your concern for your baby due.Taking the teeth out sounds barbaric to me.I really do wish you luck and hope my post doesent offend you as that is the last thing I intended to do, keep us updated we do care, :) dianne and prudence :) |
I think removing the dog teeth will probably not solve anything. Would definitely suggest finding a dog behavorist that have worked with small dogs with agression. |
I appreciate everyone's warm welcome. I dont know what else to do...i've had a trainer before and it didnt seem to work. I have not tried an animal behaviorist....does anyone have any suggestions on these types of professionals in the New York area ? |
I would just wait and see how the baby is accepted by him ...He might just "guard" the baby . After 7 years maybe he is just being protective of his family. Good luck :) |

I would do this right away. |
You say the dog is now 7 years old, has he always been agressive? At age 7 it is going to be very difficult to change his behaviour. He should not be in a home with children unless you muzzle him when he is around the baby. Working with a behaviourist may help some but it will take time and absolute dedication to training to bring about any real change. Removing the dogs teeth is a cruel step to take and I doubt very much that you'd find a reputable vet willing to do that. I would hope that any vet would never consider such a thing. Consult a behaviourist and in the mean time muzzle the dog so he knows it is unacceptable to bite people. Good luck. |

But it does make one wonder why this took so long to become a problem for the owners... |
