My first yorkie So tomorrow I am going to get my 1st male yorkie puppy. He should be 6-7lbs full grown and that is what I wanted. I have pics but the owner took them and didn't give them to me in a jpeg so I don't know how to post them. The pup is almost 11wks and I am so excited. In march I lost my 9lb lh female mini dachshund to a immune disorder and it was tragic and so sudden. I lost her a day before my bday and lets just say things just haven't been the same. I knew that I didn't want another lh dachshund/I just couldn't do it right now, I didn't want to compare, etc. So I narrowed my search to mini schnauzer, corgi, and yorkies...well I found my little boy and am so thrilled. I have never owned a yorkie and have done tons of research. I asked tons of ? to the breeder and everything is good and checks up...The pup is 3hrs one way and so I am going after work/talk about a long day but it will be so worth it. I am 25 and my Sophie used to go everywhere with me. I work alone and I was able to take her to work when I didn't have night school. So with the summer coming up and no summer school until July I figured this was a great time to get my new baby. Please give me any and all concerns. Like I said I only knew dachshunds. So this will be knew. I did ask about hereditary diseases or any health problems in the lineage and talked with the breeders vet. After 10years of breeding only one pup had gotten sick and that was with parvo and the owners fault for not keeping the pup up to date on shots etc...I have heard that yorkies are sensitive to food, and that they are hard to potty train but supposedly so were doxies and I never had a problem...I keep a tight schedule. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I do believe in crate training and until the pup is used to sleeping in the crate at night I won't allow it in the bed/yet... |
anyone? |
Welcome to TY. I am sorry to hear about your dachshund Sophie. It is very hard when we lose our pets. Congratulations on your new little Yorkie. I think if you did all your research I think you will do fine. There is a lot of threads to help you and your questions here on YT. Again Congrats. Have you picked a name yet? |
There are so many names and I don't have a clue. But I really like the name Chance, since I am taking a chance on him :) |
Welcome to YT. I love the name Chance. Can't wait to see pictures. I too have my first Yorkie and have had her for 6 years. They are such characters. To me they have a personality like no breed I have had before. They are so much fun. She can be a little moody and stubborn at times. As for housebreaking, it was hard for us. She was always a picky eater we went through many brands of food before finding something she liked. From now on I know I will only be owned by Yorkies. :D |
Right now the pup is on purina puppy chow, what works for everyones. With my dachshund the only thing that worked for her was Iams. She kept getting bladder infections and I had tried everything and that was the only thing that worked. I hated her being on Iam's b'c of the low ranking and all of the corn but it worked for her. |
I feed Wellness Simple Food Solutions. A very simple recipe. It took me 1.5 yrs. to find this food for my Pommie who is allergic to some grains and eggs. I am very happy with it. |
Please get the best food you can. You can check it out in the diet category there is a sticky thread that gives you a questionaire how to test your dog food and see how it ranks. I went through many foods with Uni, and finally found "Nature's Best Science Diet Lamb and rice small bites" it's better than the regular Science Diet stuff, it's all natural with fruits and veggies. Very reasonably priced as well. Can find it easily at petco. Make sure when you try a food, change it gradually, yorkie tummies are very sensitive. Remember, no corn, wheat, grapes/raisins, onions, avocados, nuts. Get a harness for walks, no leash on the collar. But I keep a collar w/ tags on Uni so i can keep tabs on her with my ears 24/7. good luck! Post some pics soon! |
Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk! Looks like you are getting some good advice above. :) |
I really like the name Chance! |
I love the name chance....hope everything goes well for your new pup! |
OMG....i've written a novel here~lol Congratulations on getting your first Yorkie!!! I got MY first one this summer and I absolutely LOVE her. She is lying on my chest this very second while i surf the net~ She is great company to me. Like you, I am off all summer since I work at an elementary school. So it has been perfect for me to get her trained and used to everything before I go back to work in the fall. I will be sad to be without her during the day...but by then I will be confident that I have puppy proofed all her surroundings and that she will be fine until I get home. The thing that has been the biggest issue for us so far is food. Callie is a very picky eater, as are most yorkies.. and she is very small (only 1.5 @ 11 weeks)...so I have been in a panic at times trying to find something she will eat. When they are very young, there is a greater chance for hypoglycemia and dehydration...so this is something I would suggest educating yourself about when bringing home a Yorkie puppy. Something that works really well when brining home a new one is plain yogurt. It is great for their digestive tract and different things can cause theirs to be all out of whack...like the stress of coming into a new environment...new surroundings...etc. So it would be a good Idea to have some plain yogurt on hand when you bring your little guy home. It was also suggested to me by my vet to keep some Karo syrup on hand or a bit of sugar water in case of hypoglycemia. This is a major high risk for Yorkie puppies. It can even be fatal if not treated right away...(Not to scare you) but it is one of their health risks. Here's a link that has info about it: Yorkie | Yorkshire Terrier | Hypoglycemia Information On the happy side~....they are SO much fun~!! We are working on the potty training issue with mostly successes and a few accidents from time to time. Since I know i'll be going back to work soon...I am taking them outside when I'm home at potty times... but also getting them used to puppy pads for when I am away. Natures Miracle makes a puppy pad that smells like grass to the puppy! It is working great so far! They also make a liquid that you can spray on spots where they have had accidents that totally eliminates any odor left behind. Great Stuff! I've recently purchased a new dry dog food for Callie called Orijen. It is the top rated food for dogs on consumer search. So far it is the only dry food Callie will eat...a little expensive but when you read about dog food ingredients and learn the differences...it is totally worth it. Orijen Review SO...i have tried to think of all the good advice I can give to a new Yorkie owner, like myself. I can tell you that coming here to YorkieTalk has been WONDERFUL. It is a great resource for information and friendships. Keep us posted on your new little guy!!:aimeeyork |
