Excessive barking & whinning
 
What is the best way to stop a Yorkie boy from excessive barking & whinning. He is 11 mos. old and not yet neutered, although that will happen in several weeks. The coins in a can do not work, spraying with water does not work, and neither has anything else that I have tried. He is only 7 pounds so I hate to use a bark collar. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That depends on WHY he is barking or crying.

Usually Shelby will bark and run to the kitchen or to the front door for what I think is no reason...... and she would continue to do so. apparently when she does this, she is seeing or hearing something that I don't notice (may a bird or squirrel??). I was able to stop the continued barking by picking her up and going to the front door and saying "Oh my, what do you see and hear...... thank-you for letting me know!"....... Once I "acknowledge" that she has successfully got my attention to look at what she is barking at she quiets down............ it is worth a try! ;)

This is absolutely correct! I do this with Suzi. Often times she looks out the window, or runs to the front door and barks like crazy. We have no idea as to why? So My son and I always investigate , and Suzi always calms right down afterwards. Sometimes, their is someone outside, or cars out on the street. It could be simply a bird or a cat that Suzi had heard and we had not.
The point is , if you pay attention to what your dog is trying to tell you, then it is often over very quickly, then trying to ignore the animal, or telling the dog to be quiet.

Barking Non Stop
 
Ours too, she starts barking as soon as she hears someone up in the morning and doesn't stop until you give her some attention, and I can't just let her bark as my son works nights and sleeps during the day! It's so frustrating, and she's only barking to get attention. She will sit in my lap and bark in my face if I'm not giving her enough attention, spoiled I'm sure! Signing up for obedience classes!

You know what? .... the attention thing is right

My guys usually bark at night when they are down and something scares them
The minute I just either get up and see what's wrong .... or tell them Okay, everything's alright in a calm voice they stop
If I yell or tell them to SHUT UP ... they keep up the barking
