Help needed!!! hi i'm not sure if i am ment to post this thread here so sorry if its in the wrong place... i have a one year old yorkie and tryin to teach her a few tricks like: sit, lie down ect.....i was wondering if you guys had any idea on the best way to teach her :confused: thanks |
YouTube has some good videos on teaching tricks. I don't know of a dog that won't "work for food" so use it to coax the behavior you want until your furbaby will follow your command without a treat. Use a treat that's really tasty-we use chicken or venison/fish jerky-and break it into lots of small pieces. I've even read some people lessen the meal when giving lots of treats during training when they're concerned about weight. Always use a happy voice when your pup follows the command and make a really big deal of it in the beginning. Keep it fun for both you and the pup. |
thanks i shall look on youtube... |
Always have a little piece of treat. Sitting I usually teach very quickly, except with the 11 mo old, she's a biewer, and she's the most stubborn pup I've ever had. But, a SIT while pushing their little behinds down, and then the treat. Then keep repeating |

how long does it normally take for yorkies to learn the sit command?? |
Thanks, Britster! :D There's lots of good stuff on that site besides teaching tricks. http://www.loveyourdog.com/index.html |
I got bot Remy and tino to learn sit in the first session. Best way I found to do it is to have the puppy get his eyes on that treat and with the treat in your hand go over his head. When he leans back he will naturally sit down. then give him the treat. Repeat a couple times and they got it for life! |

The dog - some dogs are easier to train The dog's age - and their health Where you train them - distractions make training harder Your demeanor and voice - if you are used to training animals it will be easier Don't go by how long it should take Take out 5 minute intervals Not much longer than that because puppies don't have much of an attention span make sure no one else is around and their are no distractions get some treats you know your puppy loves and follow some of the training methods you've found here You'll see he will catch on |

I've read once the dog understands what the command means, practicing it 20 times is supposed to solidify it. |
