I'm just clueless..is crate training potty training???
 

I am awaiting Dante, and I purchased pee pads and a Wizdog for him to hopefully go potty on, now I am wondering what crate training is! Can someone clear this up for me, I searched it, and many of the threads were about potty training and I am more confused then ever..what is the crate for?

Many people use a crate during potty training so that their dog cannot sneak off and potty in an illegal area.

I think "crate training" specifically is teaching your dog to tolerate the crate. It's a good idea to do this anyway in case you need to travel with your dog, take him to the vet, board him, etc.

I originally did not like the idea of using a crate for potty training because they spend a tremendous amount of time in there at first, but I found it to be invaluable tool. I pretty much made no progress with Thor for three weeks, and then got to 98% potty trained with the crate in three days.

I'll give it a whirl but I'm sure someone else can explain it better. I, personally don't like this method and have not done it but you get a crate just large enough for your pup to turn around and lay down in. The idea is that they won't potty in the spot they have to sleep in. So they hold it. Puppies do have to learn they can hold it and this method does indeed teach that. I just don't like locking them up for hours on end. You only let them out at intervals to eat and potty and put them back in the crate. I guess you can keep them out for a play-time as well. Anyway that's basically it. I think a lot of ppl who work use this method since they are not home to monitor. Crates are handy and necessary for puppies to hide in and have a 'safe' place of their own. Plus you need it for their protection when company comes depending on the company. I have used mine for time-out when Chloe gets too excited, sometimes she just needs to calm down and the crate if the fastest way I have found to do it. Then she is free again. The crates can be used for many things, traveling and so on. Hope this helps, sometimes I can't explain very well if I can't speak and use my hands. lol

I am a failure on crate training, I dont like it , but thats just me. I prefer to keep them in the kitchen with a pee pad, Id hate to be in a cage all day so I couldnt do that to her.
For the record Laci is only 5 3/4 months old and has no accidents in my house she goes potty outside. I did not use the crate. I have one and its there but she has no use for it, her safe space is her bed.. If/when I go out I put a gate up in the kitchen with her bed toys food and water and she is just fine.
