Training Problems I have a three year old Yorkie, and have read so many websites on potty training but am still having no luck. My Yorkie is only 3 pounds so can't hold it very well while I am at work and will go on her pad fine if she is confined to a small space but when I let her out of the bathroom after I get home I will find accidents especially at night while I am asleep. I have always heard do not punish her unless you catch her in the act... Does anyone have any suggestions? I am at a loss  |
Try crate training her at night. She will learn to hold it because she will not want to go where she's sleeping. Then in the morning take her directly to her pad to go potty. Hope this helps:D |

Thank you all. I have thought about crate training her at night. I figured that would help, she is just used to sleeping with me and a little spoiled, but that is my fault. I agree with not punishing her since it is not her fault. At night when she goes she will pee on her pad fine but she will poop right beside her pad. |
Hi Did you say you have a 14 lb Yorkie????? |
Hello, I have two 5 month old Yorkies (Alfie & Chloe) Alfie & I attend puppy classes primarily because Alfie was a lil withdrawn when I first bought him, potty training is one of the things they teach in class, here is what I have learned... first of all, keeping your baby in a crate during the night is best, taking your pup outside if possible first thing upon awakening for 10 minutes then back in. If you are leaving food down all day, then she will most likely poop several times during the day, the rule is morning put food down for 10 - 15 minutes let her eat, then pick up her food, do not feed her till you get home from work, then put her back out to do her business then back in. as for teaching them, I was taught to put water down for 10 minutes, bring water back up and put the dog out for 10 min. bring water down every 45 minutes then repeat process, this teaches the dog that after she drinks, she needs to go out to eliminate (you may want to try this on a weekend as it does require your full attention) we are almost done with the classes, my babies are not 100 percent potty trained but looks like they are getting better, they are now liking the idea of going outside for a lil while. Hope this help.... also a good idea to give her a treat after she has done something you want for her to do. |
