Frightened of car Hello YT mommies, My little Angus is frightened of the movement of the car. My boss has generously let me bring my baby to work and keep him in the office until I have papertrained him, then he will stay home with another puppy 5 weeks older than he is. So every morning I load him into the car. He seems excited to go, when he sees me getting ready to leave he jumps across my purse or shoes (whichever is on the floor) and lays on it so I can't leave without him...so cute. But as soon as I start to back out of the parking space he shakes and whimpers and sometimes makes a tiny howling sound...all the way to work. He stops whimpering at stop lights so that is why I think it is the motion that is frightening him. I have tried putting him in a crate, on my lap, in a car seat, in a dog bed on the passenger side seat and on the floor..but he still so frightened that I am afraid that he will develop a permanent fear of the car. If you have any suggestions I would really, really apreciate your help. Angus' Mommy Jeanne |
Jackson was like this as well. I didn't know what to do about it! After many rides in the car, he became absolutely fine! So it's probably just a puppy thing. Everything is so new to them. I would just consistently do car rides and associate them with good things. Never take him in the car and then bring him somewhere horrible! Then he will think that car rides = bad things. Give him a treat maybe everytime he gets in the car. He may grow out of it or he may not! Jackson grew out of it and now loves the car most of the time. He sticks his little nose out the window and enjoys it and sits very quietly strapped in the back seat, where as he used to bark and bark and whine. I would say when Jackson was around 18-20 weeks old, he became pretty comfortable. |
Bella too Bella has been doing this since she was a puppy. She is now 19 months old and she still shakes, whimpers and whines. But we take her on rides alot. Most of the time after awhile she calms down and lays down and goes to sleep. Luigi (7 months) on the other hand is pretty calm, although you cannot feed him anything or he will vomit. :aimeeyork |
Thank you Brittany for the encouraging reply. Jackson looks like a very precious puppy :) I am so concerned that he will be marked for life by this fear and yet he loves coming to work..his little puppy friend is here everyday also, wee wee pad training, so once he gets here he never wants to leave. He is only 12 weeks now and can not seem to focus on the exciting things to look at outside the car window yet. I will hold a good thought that he may grow out of this in a couple of months and keep trying to bring him with me. It is so nice to have a web site where I can go for help or just to read the posts of other yorkie loving people. Thank you again Angus' Mommy Jeanne |
My Chachi whines while he is in the car but I know he loves to go. |

Thank you all for your response. I LOVE this site!! I just ordered a "Snoozer" seat yesterday and have not recieved it yet...I haven't bought this much stuff since my son was a child. It is good to hear that your puppy likes her Snoozer. I am really enjoying being a yorkie owner once more. I lost my 13 yr old Yorkie, Winston, four years ago and I am hoping that Angus can settle down and enjoy traveling (and walking) soon so that I will have another little Yorkie companion in my life. Buddy loves to hear "Let's go for a Ride in the Car". He get's so excited and it's hard to get his harness on. He drags me down the stairs run's to the can then sit's not going near the door. I have to pick him up and put him in because he will not budge! Strange but this has been going on for years. Once in he enjoys it but is never relaxed. Every little noice, windows going up, down, wiper's on, etc makes his nervous. |
Do you think I should just leave him, strapped in, struggling and crying for help? I live very close to where I work and the drive is probably no more than 10 minutes tops, but he has pulled his front leg out of the harness twice and was twisted up in the strap which secures him to the car seat yesterday, so I took him back into my lap at the first stop light. He continued to struggle, cry and tried to crawl up my body as I was navagating the traffic. It was hard for me to keep my "calm, assertive" thoughts from turning into total distress during the drive. |
Both my girls did the same, DaisiMae is 12 mo and she just does it once in a while, Chelsea is 23 mo and she doesn't do it anymore, they will grow out of it, just a puppy things. |
Pete was trained at my work I also took my dog to work every day for about a year. I transported him in his crate which he was and still is very attached to. He also would become freightened but felt secure when I put him in the crate. It wasn't long before he loved to ride without being in it. |

Capone did the same thing when i first got him. At first i put him in his crate in the passenger seat right next to me, and he would whine and start shaking. Then i tried putting him on my lap, he would still shake a little bit. I took him consistantly for a car ride everyday. After awhile he got used to it. Then he started getting bigger so i decided to put the crate in the backseat, and now he is fine. He falls asleep everytime we go for a ride now. |

Jackson got out of his once too, they're little sneaky things! lol. Ah, it seems like just yesterday Jackson was still like this and I was at a loss. He's 7 mo. old now and so different. I tried everything like you did... I tried putting him in the crate, tried holding him, now I bought a harness/belt off eBay that buckles right into the seatbelt and then snatches onto his harness and he simply sits down in the back seat or lays down, his nose constantly smelling everything. Definitely ignore though. It was so tough at first when I had Jackson in the crate in the car, he HATED it. He barked for 30 minutes straight and finally gave up. It was tough but I totally ignored and he finally stopped. He won't voluntarily jump into the car still now but I just pick him up, buckle him in, and off we go. He knows the routine. He does a 45 minute drive every weekend to visit my dad. |
He is young still and doesn't realize what the car is. yes it is true you must associate the car with something good. After he gets in the car give him a wonderful treat (that he only gets in the car) and the same when he gets out. Unfortunetly some dogs only get in the car to go to the vet. Good thing, most yorkie owners don't do that! We used to live in Riverisde county, CA about 50 miles from our store (where we work) and Uni would come with us everyday. We have since lost our home, and now live with family about 5 miles away from our store. Uni has gotten used to the change of course. She knows when we go off course. If we make a pit stop she freaks out. Dogs are very smart. They are animals of habit. If something is different than usual they know, and will make it known! As long as your furbaby is not throwing up (motion sickness), he is just nervous. Keep him on the same schedule everyday and he will eventually accept it. dont' try to change their schedule too often, or they will get confused as to what to expect each day. Good luck! |
