Does biting ever stop??
 

My boy is a HUGE biter!!! Is there any way I can stop this? He is only 4 months old but it seems like he is "leisurley biting" rather than just teething. I have many teething toys for him but he prefers fingers and toes...

The minute you stop making yourself available as a chew toy
He'll stop
When he bites You say NO! and pull you hand away and get up and leave him there
All attention stops then and there
Don't play with him using your fingers as chewing implements
and soon he will get the message that biting is a no-no

I agree with the previous post, but for Chloe, we didn't stop the attention. We did tell her no, but we gave her a toy right after we told her no. She finally realized that she couldn't chew on hands, but chewing on toys is ok.

My Chloe was a big biter too. She still would be if we let her. She was worst when we sat down to watch TV, she would get up on the sofa with us and start to chew. We finally started sitting her on the floor each time she put her mouth on us. In the beginning some nights must have looked really funny......chew, sit her down, she jumps up, chew, sit her down, she jumps up, and so on and on and on. She is bright but has a strong will and it took days of repeating this. We also tried redirecting her with toys but she really likes our fingers best. Finally she gave up but still tries us occasionally. Hang in there.

It'll also stop as they get older.
Duke used to chase me around and no matter what we used (spray bottle, coins in bottle, stern NO...) he won't stop. Once he got older, he just stopped...so with time, I think he'll stop.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone. Gizmo is just over 4 months and I've tried everything. Just starting training and the trainer suggested the squirt bottle or the can with coins... none of which work. He ends up soaked when I use the squirt bottle because it doesn't stop him and he looks at it as a game. I'm being consistent in that I won't let him continue biting, but it's exhausting! Of course, it doesn't help that I haven't had a full night's sleep since we got him two months ago. It's a relief to know that eventually he'll stop! Thank you!

I disagree .... I don't see dogs puppies that bite bite any less when they get older
Puppies that chew and gnaw grow out of it because that's mostly teething but growling and being aggressive just progresses

My little Ewok is 10 weeks old and what I found works with him is this...when he starts to bite on my fingers I take his snout with my finger and thumb and give it a little squeeze. Just enough that he feels it but not enough to hurt him and at the same time I say....No Bite....works like a charm. Now when he starts to chew I say No Bite and he looks at me and stops. This will work for quite a while and then he tests me again and I do it again. He gets the message....

My dog's 2 m/o - had him 2 weeks and have not slept either. He's worse than an actual human baby :thumbdown

I don't know tons about the collective, but those of you who do, do you see it as more of a boy or girl thing? Because even humans - I've seen tons of little boys (little brother and nephew included - different worlds of time, lol) who bite everything from toxins to PEOPLE at 2 y/o while teething. Now, they grow out of it. When told "no", I've also seen 2 y/o (human) boys giggle and bite daddy they second he turns around again. It may just be a "terrible two's" type thing for yorkies'?

I don't know. I have every spray, coins in can - you name it - I have yelped in soprano and human YELLING, I have growled, I have bitten the damn dog I have yelled NO to time outs in the bathroom for set times. He bites everything but his toys, pees ON ME in my bed, and bites anywhere - including jumping for my face!

^^^This was me last week. Then this week he's had not one accident all week. He now plays mainly with his toys and knows some by name. He responds well when treats are involved - and after one day where he cried and whimpered and bit everything in site - we do'do's realized he's in teething PAIN and froze his toys; made ice cubes in bone shapes. He's gotten 100 times better - but he still does bite - and now he's began barking and growling, which took him two weeks to even let a *peep* out.

I've had tons of dogs before - from huge malamutes to long haired-chihuaha and jack russel pups - this one is definitely the most human-to-human like experience ever. We got this puppy as a baby-replacement - but we were WRONG when we thought this would be easier! :laughs:

you can try some of the chew stopper sprays. Bitter sweet Apple is one that you can spray your hand and when he bits he will not like that in his mouth. But remember after you have done a training time with him, wash your hands good because it would not be good to get it in your eyes. But this works.

Bella went through biting our feet, I had bruises and brought me to tears a few times. I finally ended up telling her "no bite" and placing her in her x pen for 5 min (5 min is eternity to a her). She finally got the idea and quit. Now is she wants to start playing with our hands, we just say "no bite" and she instantly quits. The others have great ideas and do whatever works for you.

Well I am persisting with the word "Stop" which seems to be having more effect ...I also think he now knows that I mean business...It usually gets worse for me when he feels very excited etc. so I now try to keep him calmer.

But of all the Yorkies I have had...and they were all boys..this one is the worse for biting fingers toes etc. and jumping up at my face ...It does make me wary. Although I n ow am saying to him "give me a kiss" and he seems to be gettin g the idea. So guess it all takes time and lots of patience.

My yorkie did that for a few months and now he doesn't bite anyone or anything. It might be that I was very consistent in yelling NO when he would try to knaw on me, or maybe that his teeth dont bother him anymore I dont know. so id suggest that. my dog is only an underwear biter (i think he must have been Quagmire from Family Guy in a past life) lmao.
