running away (help) I need some just resently every time I open my front door my yorkie takes off running and I have to chase her down I'll call her but she keep running. Why does she do that and how can I stop her from doing this thanks for any help:confused::mad: |
Ugh, we are in the very same predicament. If I say 'come' Ollie runs as fast as can in the opposite direction.... |
Ugh.... me too.... after chasing them a few times and a couple of close calls, I put a ex pen around the front door to keep them from darting out. Its especially helpful when I bring in a lot of groceries and i can keep the door open without them running out!!! |
Two things you need to do First is that the front door is to claimed by you meaning you have to give them permission to exit This is important becaus eit can be dangerous when they dart out the door and go running away Lots of dogs ahve been hit by cars this way Go to the door and open just a crack When they charge to go thru - close it and say UH! Keep repeating this until you see them wait Open it a bit more and keep doing this until they are sitting when you open the door and YOU go thru first ... all the time Next the coming when called This is a little counter intuitive The more you call them and they don't come...... the more they won't come when you call So call them once ...if they don't come have a treat ready or a loud squeaky toy that they will go for |
Lots of dogs continue to run because they think its a huge game of chase. If they keep running from you, grab a squeaky toy or something loud to get their attention then YOU run in the opposite direction. Usually this gets them chasing you. When they start running after you say "come" and continue running. As they get close slow down but keep moving. When they are about to get you say come again then scoop them up and give them lots of praise. |
I need help with this too, its really scary... Im a nervous wreck!! |
My OTis is a runner, if he gets through a door, he forgets his name and every command he's been taught. I have an ex-pen in front of the door. I agree, if you can get his attention and go in the opposite direction, he'll probably follow you. Otis is 5 and he's probably gotten away from me 4 times in his life. Every time is terrifying. Good luck. |
Yes I agree with JoeyP you must claim the door. Even when you are inside your home, you always lead and they follow you through every doorway, that's good practice for when it comes time to try the front door. Also you need to teach the stay command. have your baby sit, and back away from her slowly with a flat open hand command (palm to her, fingers upward) while saying "stay" hold it for a second or two, and COME BACK TO HER and say good stay and reward. Do not say "good stay" and have her come to you, then she will think stay means to stay for a bit then come running back. Keep training with you going farther away each time. When she gets that, try doing it with your back towards her. Now my Uni will stay at the front door of my shop with the door open, even if people wallk by and she will stay. Good luck! |
You've gotten some good advice. When you chase your Yorkie, it becomes a game, lol. For your Yorkies safety, teach them the "come" and "stay" commands. Practice it every single day. Have you heard of clicker training? I highly recommend it for its ease and how quickly it works (if you follow the principles correctly) Karen Pryor Clickertraining| dog training and cat training info, books, videos, events |
I know nothing about training but when my yorkie was little, the kids and I played a game. We called it mop pong (Her name is moppet so it was a take off on ping pong). We'd space ourselves around the house and take turns calling her name. When she ran to the person who called they would give her a reward, sometimes a treat, or sometimes just praise or a cuddle. Then another person would call her and she'd be off again. She seemed to enjoy the game and very quickly learned to come to her name. It also tired her out which has always been a good thing with our high energy girl. |
Reesie is the same. She never runs to get to something interesting, like the dog next door, or the squirrels, she just runs down the drive and then down the road. Picture a Yorkie running like heck down a country dirt road as fast as she can, bigger than normal ears laid back, looking just like a rabbit and almost as fast. It's funny except when it was was snowing and the puddles were cold and deep and I had slippers on! |
My Yorkie loves to go in the car......so if she does get outside the fenced area running around....I call her to "go for a ride" and she comes to the car. If even works better if you have your car keys to jingle and call her. |
Make your area fun... My husband used to yell at our dog Ernie when he ran off and it always seemed odd because why would the dog come to you when your mad and yelling...anyway, more to the point, when they run off you want to have a ton of fun where you are because you want them to come back, if you have to fall to the ground playing then fall to the ground playing. At puppy class the trainer told us to make it as exciting as possible to be by your side....they won't want to leave....Also, I find baby gates useful, I have a bunch anyway because I have a 2 year old and I use them for the dogs as well. You can probable put one up on the outside of your front door...might not look that great unless you get one to blend in but at least they can't run out in the street when you open the door.... |
Great idea! Quote:

Same here. Reese runs as soon as the door opens! Or if she's out back (we don't have a fenced yard) she'll do fine... then next thing we know she's 3 houses down and nothing will turn her back. |
