Do anyone's yorkie ring a bell I been trying to get my li'l girl to let me know when she has to go potty. Sometime she will stare at me, a lot of times I will just take her out. She don't go in the house at all if I am at home and sometimes when I am at work she don't go potty or she might go on her pee pee pad, but that's no often. I have a trainer coming over to teach her to ring a bell when she got to go out to potty, Just want to know what my yorkie friends think of this. :animal-pa |
We trained Leo to ring a bell. We have a bell that hangs right by the door and every time we took him out as a puppy, we would take his paw and tap the bell. I had two friends who would come over at lunch to let him out to potty and they did the same thing (while thinking I was nuts and that it would never work). Sure enough, after some time, he was ringing the bell on his own. He doesn't use it anymore now that he's a "big boy", he just whines at the door. But I will train Delilah with the bell also. I love it because you can hear it throughout the house so I can be in the kitchen and she can let me know she has to potty. |
In principle I love the idea, but I saw some posts on YT before that some scalliwags ring the bell just for attention! I may give it a try myself - please tell me how you get on :) |
This is a great question! Tater is a quiet boy and is potty trained if I let him out. But if I am busy and lose track of time realizing it's been more than our usual every couple hours, then I find a pee pee spot. I spoke with my groomer/trainer and she suggested training him to ring a bell as well. |
We trained Bentley with the bell on the floor,he learned really fast, he also learned really fast that it got our attention1 LOL.So we had nonstop ringing!we took the bell away and he starting coming to us and letting us know he had to go out,so I would say it worked for him:) |
i taught lexi how to ring the bell too. its not a bell, but i rigged up some small chimes by the door knob and she rang them when she wanted to go out. sooo funny. she just moves her nose to let it ring |
My two ring a bell by the door when they want to go out. They do ring it for attention but not for "pay attention to me" attention, but like when their water bowl is empty, that sort of thing. We discourage it by making them go out when they ring the bell, even if that's not what they wanted. It's not really a problem :) |
I had a rope with antique bells on it that I had hanging around the door knob (belonged to my grandmother). My little Heidi taught herself to ring the bells when she wanted out and she also taught another yorkie and the cat to ring the bells.:animal36 |
I've just started this with Roxy and after a week she's getting the idea that she needs to ring the bell if she wants to go out. She thinks it's great fun and grabs the ribbon in her mouth and jumps around excitedly when I get to the door :) |

Well we had the meeting with the trainer and it went good. we talked about her ringing the bell and other tricks, well the cost is $725 and $875.:eek: |

I thought it was a bit much, the lady came out and we did the eval, and she told me what they do and the tricks that you can add to the packet. Its is a 5 week to 7 week class,and the come out once a week. They do come out to your home. It sounded good what she was saying but the price is just a bit to much, so I think I will just take the time to do the training myself, I have taught her a lot she is smart and learns fast. Classes that you attend are worthwhile because the trainer can make sure your technique is appropriate and you can ask questions. It would be like taking a yoga class vs. watching a yoga DVD and trying to follow along. But once you learn the technique you can do it on your own at home :) |
