Furniture All- My partner and I just rescued the most wonderful Yorkie from a Yorkie rescue group on Saturday. Thus far, the little guy has proved to be just about perfect...quiet, warm, respectful...except that he's expressed the occasional preference to hang out on our upholstered chairs and sofa instead of his dog bed. In general, we're trying to train him to stay off the furniture (it's all pretty new), but the sticking point is that sometimes we want him up on the furniture when we're comfortable with it, i.e. when we're on the couch and want to snuggle/are there to supervise. How do you train a dog to stay off the furniture unless he's invited up? Anyone? |
hmm I would keep telling him no everytime he gets up on the couch. However, this could be tricky to him if it is the same place you want him up on but only when you permit him too. Every time you say no and he stays down should give him a treat. but must be consistent on teaching him you don;t want him up there. i personally would just not let him up there just so he does not get confused. Positive reinforcement =D |
Congratulations on your new addition! I got my yorkie a few months ago and I just adore him. I agree with yoon714, it will be confusing for him to be allowed on the furniture sometimes. I would allow it completely, or not at all. If you want to do some more sophisticated training, you could try using a special blanket. If the blanket is on the furniture, he can be on the blanket, otherwise no. Just be aware that this will be harder to train. |
You need to make it clear that he can only be up on the furniture with your permission This takes some time and vigilance Have him be in the room with you and everytime he jumps on the furniture it's an emphatic NO! and shoo him off immediately after he's gotten the message what I did was when I wanted my pups on the couch with me I picked them up so the act of jumping up was forbidden and this made it clearer I think after they had gotten used to the whole deal I will call them up occasionally now |
thanks! Thanks everyone! Great success thus far with the advice in action. Drew |
