Shake I cannot get Scruffs to learn shake. I have tried to put out my hand, grab his paw, make him sniff the treat..? All he does is try to lick my hand or lays down. I don't know what I should be doing to get him to learn shake. Any suggestions? |
I just taught this to Sophie. What I did was while she is sitting, I would have the treat in my hand and say "paw" while touching the top of her paw. After several days of doing this she finally picked up her paw to get it out from under my finger. I quickly praised her "good girl" and gave her the treat. Then I would do it 10 more times!!! I used the word 'shake' at first too, with no reaction. When I switched to "paw", she seemed to understand that better as I've used that word before when rubbing her paws or cleaning them after being outside in wet grass, etc. It was a familiar word to her. Good luck! |
There are a couple ways to teach this. It sounds like Scruffs doesn't mind having his paws touched, which is big. Try just holding the treat out in your closed hand. Let him nose at it; eventually he should try pawing at it, at which point you give him the treat. If he is really determined to lick it, try bopping him on the nose very gently to encourage him to try something else. |
I taught Mimi how to give paw in one night i was so happy. What I did was I would grab her paw and tell her paw every time and give her a treat. Then i tries saying paw without grabbing her paw but she did not understand so i would grab it and say paw and gave her a treat. Then after numerous times of doing this. I would take out a treat and say give me paw. She would first sit and then finally gave paw. I was soo suprised one how she learned so quick. I praised her a lot.! It takes patient and time. Just keep taking her hand and say paw and give her a treat for few days. Then take a treat out and say paw she will really want the treat so she will eventually give it. Now the problem with Mimi is whenever I take out a treat she will automatically give paw lmao! So I have to say no and say another command lol |
oh I forgot to add I find Yorkie Yummies by Chattiesmom the best treat to train them with. lol healthy and they love it! Best wishes:) on your training |
I taught a few of my dogs to give me their paw... it's patience and repetition. Some get it... some never will. ;) |
Jackson took forever to learn shake for some reason! He learned "bang bang (play dead)" before shake, LOL! I took me about 3 weeks of every day doing it for at least 2-5 minutes, depending on how much time I had. I would just say "shake" and take his paw and then give a treat. I seriously thought he would NEVER get it but he did! He did everything else so easy... he learned sit within five minutes. He does roll over, bang bang, down, come, stay, sit, and then he finally learned shake. After shake, I taught him high-five. |
This was also the hardest thing so far I taught Nolee! I would tap on the back of his leg (till he would raise it) and say shake, then he got his treat! Persistance is all I can say! Good Luck!:animal-pa |
Thank you so much for all of your tips! I'll be trying again later tonight. Hopefully he'll realize that paw does not mean lick my hand for the treat! I'll be trying out all of your techniques! Thanks again. |
