Potty Treats??? I was wondering if anyone thought it would be silly to give my babies a treat after they go where they are suppose to. Generally this is on the pads but i do need to start taking them outside. Anyway, I am a stay at home mom so im with them most of the day. They were doing great on the pads with almost 0 accidents but now they seem to be relaspsing so I was wondering if treats would work or do i just have it all wrong??? |
Treats are fine for praising the little ones!!! I'm sure greatly appreciated too.....:D Soooo answer is treats are a-ok for potty training. |
Are you kidding?! That's a PERFECTLY okay thing to do! LOL. Giving treats for pottying is awesome! It totally helps them realize "Oh, when I do this in this spot.. I get one of those!" |
Absolutely give treats for any behavior that is good. Just make sure that you're giving them immediately and also include verbal praise. Use the same words each time. Like "good potty" or "good peepees" - whatever works for you. Eventually you can just give the verbal praise and not have to worry about the treats for every single "good" behaviour". You're doing a great jobs by giving them treats for going potty where they're supposed to. Michele :-) |
Yes Yes yes By all means please give the treats, It took my wife about 3 weeks to get Sadie to go on the rubber mat in the garage by my work bench in the winter months, this wasn't the idea, but hey it worked. But she doesn't get anything in the summer for going in the back yard other then praise and a belly rub down. the best of luck too. |
Great! Thank you all for your great info and suggestions!!! Im going start right away!!! Im sure Ace and Arizona thank you too!!! :) |
By all means treats for good pottys! I treat for all of them along with 'good girl', 'Yea!', clapping hands. I've even pointed out pottys on the pee pad that I didn't see her do at the time. I point it out, and praise & treat for those too. I know they supposedly don't connect something later, but when it's a potty on the pad, why not? Now that she understands the going outside, we've only had occasional pees on the pad, and no poops in the house. Yea!!! Good luck! |
:thumbup::thumbup: Yes, Yes, Yes, do give treats after what I call 'Good Potties" my lil one know to head to the kitchen once she has done a "Good Pottie" cuz she knows she is gonna get a treat.... :animal36:animal36:animal36 |
All of mine know that when they go out and be a "good girl" -- and "good boy" they get a treat when they come in. They will sit by the door until I give them their treat. My dachshund is 16 years old and she still expects her treat. One day I was sort of busy and just let them in and went back to a chore I was in the middle of. About 1/2 an hour later I noticed good ol' Kate was still sitting by the door patiently awaiting her treat. She had been a "good girl" and she was not going to amble back to bed without it. Now Ben, my male Yorkie, would not wait so patiently, he would be reminding me with a sometimes not so gentle nudge of his nose on my leg. LOL! :D |

I recently had the same problem with my pomeranian. She was using pee pads just fine for a couple of years and all of a sudden she was peeing on the floor!!!. I tried putting out more pee pads and that didnt work. So I got these little jerky treats for her. I ONLY give the jerky treats to her when she pottys where she is suppose to. So now she knows when she gets the jerky treats its because she went potty on the pad. Its worked GREAT!!!! She hasnt had an accident ever since. In fact, I swear she purposely pees on the pad when im looking at her cuz she wants a treat!!! No more stepping in puddles of pee in the dark when I get home LOL!!!! I highly recommend this method!!! Good Luck and keep us posted!!! |
I always give both of my boys a treat after they potty, or come when called. My Lhasa has a habit of ignoring me and doing his own thing, so when he comes when called he gets a good boy treat, and he is 6 years old. And since we are making our own treats now, several different kinds, some with chicken, others with turkey and then beef jerkey, they never know which one they are going to get. So they both come running just to see what yummie they get. And they also have to sit and stay before they get that treat. I figure get as much out of them as I can lol. |
Ohhhh and when both boys (Zeke and Baxter) were learning to do potties outside. It is mandatory I think that you have to do the Potty Dance, Just to make sure that they know they have really done something really good |
