Please Help! I purchased our first yorkie about 2 weeks ago and decided that we would like to purchase the brother. We had the first one for a week before we got the brother. Once we got the brother home the first guy, Marquez, got very jealous and is always biting and jumping on his brother. Sort of like biting his ankle then run away. Is this just play or is marquez really jealous of his brother??? Sometimes marquez actually plays to ruff and they really fight each other hard and we have to separate them!! This is really tearing me and my wife apart and we are arguing about it all the time... I really just dont know what to do. I spoke with the breader to see if he could take the second one back because I would rather loose the second dog than my wife!!! Has anyone else had this sort of problem when the got a second yorkie? both of them are boys... Please any advice is much appreciated!! its really affecting our whole lives |
Well... personally, I think they will grow out of it and learn to be buddies. But you'll have to describe a little more in detail, when they are playing a.k.a fighting.. are they hurting each other? Are they yelping out in pain? Is there mean growling involved? If not, they are probably just being puppies and it's totally normal! I think they're better off having each other :) And it's easier sometimes. When you leave the house, you know they have each other. And you get the potty training, puppy stage, etc out of the way at the SAME time! A lot of people will get one dog and then a year or two later, get another puppy having to go thru that puppy stage again :P Which can be very rough! You can see a video a few seconds in of some Yorkie pups playing together here: I don't think you should give up - keep them both! I believe you will be happier in the long run! My yorkie, Jackson, plays with my moms dog pretty rough. He will bite her ankles and her ears but she plays along with him, it doesn't bother her. It's just how dogs play. I think you will KNOW when and if it gets sincerely too rough. |
Well normally its probably just playing around but a few times its pretty violent. Like you said, you can tell the difference. We literally had to separate them before they hurt themselves. I personally would prefer to keep both of them and think that they are just in a puppy stage. thank you for the video of the puppies playing! thats how mine play and the aggressive sounds look like about the 2 minute mark when the get a little louder sounding. I would really like to try to stick it out just let them be puppies. Any other thoughts from those of you who have more than one yorkie? |
they are trying to establish who is the alpha dog of the house and it should be YOU. I have siblings also we got them about 3 1/2 weeks apart. Now they still play REALLY rough at 5 months. We are getting the male fixed pretty soon ans that should calm him down, something for you to consider doing asap. My male is over 5# and the female is only about 3# so we do get concerned when he gets to pushey with her and will need to break them up. I agree you will be glad you have two once you get used to it. Keep a stiff upper lip adn goodness, don't argue over it. They are only true puppys for about 8-10 months then they will calm down on their own. PS.Dogs/Children learn what they live, so if you home is loud the dogs will be too Good Luck, I truley wish you luck with the adjustment. |
^ I agree with the post above, as well. You definitely need to establish yourself as the leader of their pack. As it definitely sounds like the one is trying to dominant everyone. Watch the Dog Whisperer for some info and advice on that. :) Definitely agree with the neutering ASAP! It gets all that testosterone out of them and usually chills them out! |
Aww ... dont bring the second one back :( I have two boy littermates and they are so much fun with each other and with me There is a couple of things going on First .... puppies will play fight esp at this age and it will sound and look horrific sometimes because they vocalize You do not need to get involved unless you here a yelp and usually they will stop on their own If you need to stop them you yell loudly UH! or clap you hands if you are close you can then grab their necks to immobilize them This is what adult dogs do when pups get out of line They are figuring out who is going to be dominant ... this is how they do it This will calm down soon But it is noisy and it looks much worse than it actually is |
I have 3 females and when they play they sound like they are killing each other. 2 tend to pick on Cali and when it gets bad I just stop the play/fighting by removing one of them fro the mix for a break. You will be so happy that you kept the 2. They are such good company for each other and when not playing will snuggle up. Just give them a little time. |

Definitely give it more time!!!! Our girl is 15 mos old. She constantly wants attention from us, bringing toys and following us around. After having her for a year we decided to get a 2nd one as a playmate for her. We got another little girl (10 mos old ) and at first I was really worried. The fights were horrible sounding. I was afraid to reach down to pull them apart! Now 3 wks later, they are inseperable. I can't believe I ever doubted them. This was the best decision we could have made. Good luck! |
