Issues with housebreaking We got our puppy yesterday, and we're having issues getting the house breaking started. We have puppy pads, but he's more interested in dragging them around the house than he is peeing on them. We take him outside hourly, and have him out there for around 10 minutes at a time, and as soon as I bring him back in, he pees on the carpet. We were also given this spray to use that is supposed to be a housebreaking aid, that you spray where you want them to pee, and it's "special scent" tells them to go there, and that's not working either. I know it takes time, and it's only been a day, but this is my first dog, and I just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong? |
I am working on training our new little Maltese puppy right now. I use an xpen to keep him in. He has a pad in there (i bought a pad holder to keep the pad in place and i love it). When i am able to sit right there with him i keep the door to his pen open and the minute he begins to start sniffing around i get him and put him back in the xpen and close the door. When he goes to his paper to potty, praise him like crazy! It takes a lot of time and a lot more patience!! Just keep at it....he will get it. The key is NO FREEDOM until totally trustworthy!! Good Luck!:D Oliver and Brooklyn were trained the same way. I love the xpen method...it worked great for me! |

Don't give your dog a chance to go on the carpet when you take him back inside. Take him first to a potty pad--carry him if necessary--and confine him to it for five minutes or until he goes potty. If he doesn't go, put him in his crate. An hour later, do the whole process again: outside-->pad-->crate. Once he goes, he can have playtime for a half hour or so, then the process starts again. This is really what you need to commit yourself to if you want to succeed. It's hard, hard work with Yorkies, but worth it. Good luck! |
Roughly two and half months ago I cried everyday for three weeks. Finally he got it and I stopped trying to trade him in for a pair of new shoes. I kid I kid. As a baby his bladder just can’t hold anything. Austin would play and pee. Get excited pee. No control. And your baby is still young and doesn’t know you (what makes you happy). I stopped taking him outside after a week it was just too stressful and cold. About a month ago he got it. Finally I can count on one hand how many times I have to clean up the carpet. And he has started to go outside on command. Now we know each other better he gives me signs, I had to learn them. My husband and I travel for work and for whatever reason he hasn’t had an accident in the hotel. Austin plays with his pee pads as well. Sometimes its after he poos as if to say. “Look what I did Give me a treat”. I yell a few times and he’ll stop for a minute. I just wanted to let you know how much I understand your frustration. Austin is my first dog as well. |
I honestly think he needs time to adjust to his surroundings. We trained Noelle with a potty bell at the door and it has been working pretty good after some patience. At first we had to stay outside with her for quite a while until she went then praised her for it. She got the hang of it after a few times but it took some patience! |
