Loud Yelping Yorkie...PLEASE HELP!!! So my 6 month old little one has a serious problem. Every time we get her harness on and open the door to take her on a walk she starts freaking out and yelping as loud as she possibly can. She also does this when she is put in her crate or carrier and as soon as we open the door to take her out she starts screaming. We live in an apartment complex and it is so embarrasing to take her out because she sounds like she is being tortured for about a minute. This is making it impossible to take her anywhere because she seriously freaks out. She loves going on walks but the initial taking her out the door makes it impossible. Please help me....this is out of control! |
Im gonna Bump this... |
I don't know if this would help but the first time we were ever going to leash our puppy, I let her drag around the leash for a bit before actually attaching it. (I kept an eye on her the entire time though to be sure she didn't tangle herself in it.) By the time I was ready to hook her up to head out, she was totally okay with the idea because she didn't view the leash as a threat. (I had also put on her harness vest even prior to letting her play with the leash.) |
our female did the high pitch excited barking thing when ever we reached for her walk stuff .. we got her over it by holding all day her walking lead..then randomly picking it then putting it down while ignoring our yappy dog..the barking gets unbearable but eventually stops! we got her over the excitement by taking her back out as soon as she got in and just going in and out the door lots .. neighbors must of thought we were strange dog owners but it eventually worked .. now we can go walkies with only a waggly tail and no over excitement barking |

I just thought of something else you might try and I know this will probably sound crazy. However, I think it would work with ours. What if you say, "Okay then...you stay here. We're going out" and then actually stay out of the apartment while she is in there. I really think our puppy comprehends much more than I realized... Yesterday I only mentioned the word "carrot" as my husband was going to refill his glass and she followed and sat patiently until he gave her one. There was no other context for her to have known what was possibly going to happen because he is constantly filling his glass throughout the day. (I don't think it would require a lengthy time out in the hall away from her. She'll probably be shocked at first that she's not the focal point of attention.) |

Ok so I have tried all your ideas..with still no success!! I have tried putting her harness on and ignoring her while she howls and sprints around in excitement....and when she finally stops i will put the leash on and as soon as that door is open she screams and screams and screams. I have tried taking her in and out many times a day....same thing each time. I have tried putting her in her crate and carrying her crate outside....she still screams. She loves going outside and on walks but she will not stop...and we definitely cannot take her outside at night...because she would honestly wake up the entire complex! My boyfriend and I are at our wits end...and don't know what else to do. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |
Only try one thing at a time she may be overwhelmed with all the new stuff you are trying. Let her play with her harness and leash so she knows it's not scary, but don't let her chew them. Once she does that she will no longer respect them and chew them all the time, even to get away. Take her to the mailbox and right back tiny trips may increase with her comfort level. It's a big scary world out there! |
Hi there :) What type of harness are you using? When you say that she is yelping what exactly does that mean? Is she in pain or is it excitement? |
Yes, what kind of screaming is she doing? Is she barking from excitement or is she yelping as if she is in pain? Because with either the treatment is going to be different |
