Harness/leash training Hi everyone, What is the best way start harness training our little one? Someone suggested that we should put the harness on and keep it on for a while so that she gets used to it. Unfortunately, the moment we put it on, Sprinkles starts going crazy and tries to take it off. Help! |
Susan went wild over having a collar and leash on at first too. I couldn't stand seeing her seeming to suffer so (I know she wasn't actually suffering -- she was just making herself hysterical because it was new and alarming to her). So I'd put it on and leave it for 5 or 10 minutes and if there was a moment when she even SORT of slowed down her fit throwing, I'd take it off. It only took a few days for her to get used to it. Now she wears a collar all the time and gets excited when she the leash because it means something wonderful is about to happen. Hope your situation goes as smoothly. |
I never put a harness on them without the true purpose, such as to go for a walk or ride in the car. You can try short walks at first and lengthen them. You might be in for a rough ride for a little while, but when they realize they get to go for a walk then they quickly find they love their collar and leash and get excited to wear it. |
I wouldn't worry to much if she gets fidgety and acts really goofy when you put it on her. Harley took a LONG while to get used to his collar.. He always found a way to get it in his mouth!? Just make sure you keep an eye on her while she has it on. I don't recommend leaving it on her while you're not around until you're 100% sure she won't try and get it off. I just put Harleys on when we go out for walks and take it off when we're in the house. Just to be safe! :) |
