Now 2 and Pees on my sofa ..HELP!! I have a 2yr old male yorkie that pees or marks as I am not sure, its not alot of pee but enough for him I guess. He is peeing on my sofa, now and again...I keep the sofa covered as I know he will do this, and we both work, so we are not there to catch him in the act. I took him to the vet and he checked out fine, the Vet suggest that he might have behavior problem because my husband and I are all that live in the house with our Murphy and lving in the country he does not see many people or other dogs, so he is very attacted to us. He has no interaction with other animals or people for that fact...only us and maybe an occasional rabbit or two. We are thinking of getting another furbaby, but I wonder if Murphy will teach the new pup to potty anywhere it likes...he is Pee-Pad trained but does have accidents on my carpet ... Any suggestions on what I can do to help him maybe not be so lonely while we are at work...or what can be done about the peeing problem. Has anyone else ever had this problem, I would love to know how you deal with it. Thanks Kat |
Is Murphy neutered? He is marking his territory. Neutering could help, but his behavior is pretty established at this age. Unfortunately, a new puppy will learn by example from Murphy, the good and the bad. Marking is one of those habits that is almost an epidemic in "packs". I can't tell you how many wonderful people I know who foster for rescue groups who say their dog never marked until a foster who marked came into their home. I know people whose dogs have learned to mark from a visitor! |
Murphy is not neutered at this time, but we are considering it. He was a very sick furbaby while young and we are surprised he made it, our vet at the ime suggested not neurtering him because he has trach problems and he felt Murphy would not tolerate it well. So we waited, now we have a new vet and new ideas, however, our baby is displaying things we never thought of to be honest. we love this little guy to death, and yeah I guess I could get a new sofa, but I really wonder why he does it. Dont male yorkies get tired of marking the same place? He does not do any of this when we are home, just when we leave and are gone for a period of time, we come home and find the little guy laying on the top of the sofa looking out the window waiting ...it seems. Any suggestions? Even if I get him neutered, would this stop him from displaying this behavior or it wont really make a difference thanks for answering Kat |
I would suggest neutering and then keeping him gated off in the kitchen, bathroom or utility room when you are not home. Also make sure he has plenty of things to keep him occupied while you are at work. He might just be telling you in pee what he can't say, that he does not like being left home alone all day. Can you arrange to take him to doggy day care once or twice a week, or, have someone come in and walk him every day while you are at work? If you get #2, include your 2 year old in the potty training sessions. Take them both out at the same time. If all this fails, talk to an animal behavioral specialist. |
He is marking the couch as his own I would make the couch a "No Dog" zone and keep him out of the room when you cannot specifically watch him When you are with him watch when he jumps on the couch UH! and down keep repeating until you get the right response and he is not to go on the couch without your permission .... at all times You have to reclaim the couch as YOUR possession not his |
