AGH!!! 8 Months Old and still not potty trained!! What am I doing wrong?? Sophie is now 8 months old. She knows better then to go in the house (I know this because when she does she hides and looks soooo guilty). We crate train her during the day. She never has accidents in the crate. When I take her outside she goes pee and then wants to come back in or play. I try to stay out there for 20 minutes or more until she goes poop but sometimes she won't. As soon as we go inside she goes on the floor. I dont know what else to do with her. We praise her when she goes outside and scold her when she does inside. She is SOOO stubborn!!! |
Ha haahhhah..well I see you got yourself a yorkie...these dogs r very hard to potty train..my Bryan is 14 months and still will have accidents....99% of the time he will take his little butt to his wee wee pad and go potty but sometimes I thnik he means to got on the pad but misses... And went I catch him I say BRYAN and he takes off running and will hide under the table but just keep giving praise when she goes in the right places....they love the praise and be consistant with your discipline but not too hard because they r just sooo cute.....Good luck! |
they hide not because they no they did something wrong, but because they see you all mad at the poop on the floor. Occassionally when morgan is sick she will have an accident on the floor and she will only run away when i notice it and get mad. what you can do is leash her when you take her outside to potty. If you've been out there for a while and she won't go, but you know she has to, then go back inside and put her in the crate for 5-10 minutes. then take her back outside on the leash until she goes. keep doing this until she potties outside. then she gets free rein play time. |
Thanks for your tips! I will try them. |
LOL!!! It must be the name! My Sophie will be 8 months old on May 8th, so she's close in age to your Sophie. We can go a whole week with no accidents in the house. She'll tell us maybe 60% of the time she has to go out and the other 40% my Yorkiemom Eyes pick up on her signals. Just like last week...all week, no accidents. Sunday night she decides to pee in the house. Not one, but TWICE!!! My DH is about ready to wring my neck and it is the main reason he will not let me get another one...which I want SOOOOO BAD! :( |
You seem to be doing better then I am. My Bella is all most 8 months. She goes poop and pee in her crate every night and has at least one accident in the house a day. She never tells me she has to go. I just make sure to take her out often ( about every hour or so). Good luck to you. If you find out what works let me know. |
Baxter was almost a year old before he was what I call house-trained. He does pretty well now. Hang in there - it will get better. I do tell him to teetee and poop when we go out. I wanted him to understand that that is what outside was for. I still tell him that as soon as we hit the yard and when he does the actual deed. I dream of one day going out and saying teetee and he does it on command but I think he is too stubborn for that to ever happen. |
Piper will be 1 year old at the end of the month. She will go weeks with no accidents then out of the blue she'll pee on the floor. Sometimes Piper will do her little potty dance in front of the door when you're in the kitchen and I know she has to go out but it's up to me to take her out regularly because she never really asks to go out. As long as I bring her out every couple hours there will be no accidents. I won't consider her 100% housebroken until the time comes when she always asks to go out on her own. I had a male yorkie for 13 years that trained 100% in a couple months. By 4 months old he never had accidents and he always barked to go out. I never had to think about potty breaks because he knew when he had to go out. I'm hoping Piper will be like that some day but I'm not holding my breath. |
THANK GOD FOR BELLA! I had her little butt potty trained in 5 weeks. She is almost 7 months old and I got her when she was 11 weeks. By 16 weeks she was going potty outside everytime. We did have 1 accident since her potty training, but she had JUST come home from her surgery, where her medicine upset her tummy and she could barely stand up and pooed right by the door, she was trying to make it, she really was!!! She only had say....4 accidents in her crate and she never pooped in it. I do think my other dog, Skeeter, who is a rat terrier, did help her along because he kind of "showed her what to do" if you will! Good luck with your little one. They are stubborn, but you have to show them who is boss! Sometimes I say "its bella house, I just live here..." |
8mo.???? What if you had one that will be 2 in June and still isn't broke? Eight mo. sounds good to me. lol!!!! These are stubborn little buggers. I have 2 mini schnauzers that are housebroke and were from the time they were just a few weeks old. Kayla will go out the doggie door with them and tee tee (sometimes) but will come back in a poop. She will sometimes poop on the patio because the doggie door steps right out on the patio. ugh!! I have wondered about putting her a little place with fake grass on the side of the patio and see if she will use it. Believe me, I know what you are going through. I would love to have another yorkie when Tina passes because she will soon be 12, and I know its going to kill me. But, I would hate to have 2 not housebroke. |
I think I am more trained than Olivia is at 8 yrs old - trained to take her out every hour or so, that is! She doesn't let me know she has to go, at all - ever. It's totally up to me to take her out and see if she will go. I attribute it to her being a retired breeder, where I was told she was trained to do her business in her crate. Which she also still does! But she's such a good girl otherwise...thank goodness! ;) |

A tip I can give you for the crate is make it small enough that she just has enough room to turn around and lay comfortably. Before we did this she had accidents in her crate all the time. The day we blocked it off was the last time she had an accident in there. It really works. |

Oh you are lucky you get signals 60% of the time. Sophie NEVER gives any and will go in the house if I dont bring her out once an hour. AND with that she still has accidents!! |
