Help w/ harness & outdoor stuff... I am starting to try to leash train Bailey. She hasn't had all of her shots yet, but she's had 2 sets. I just had new concrete laid in my backyard so I've been taking her out with her harness and leash to practice walking around the backyard. The only thing is I have a couple big problems with her. She loves going outside, but she hates the harness. The one I have is very complicated to put on, and when I try she grabs any part of it in her mouth and won't let go, making it practically impossible to put it on. I will get her a velcro kind eventually, but it seems like a waste now when she'll grow out of it (she's 14 weeks). HOW can I get her to sit still and let me put it on her? Also, since she's starting to love the outside so much, she is always by the back door and tries to dart out when I open it! This scares me so much because I don't want her ever getting out & lost. She's not yet microchipped. She knows sit and stay as long as I have a treat in my hand, but it doesn't always work where the open door is concerned. Help? |
I can't edit that first post, but I wanted to add that once I do get the harness and leash on her she spends half the time outside trying to bite the leash instead of walking. |
Louie's favorite treats are liver biscotti: strange huh? Anyway I hold one in my hand and he has to come to me and put his head in his harness to get it. |
She sounds like a typical pup. It takes awhile for these little ones to understand what all the stuff if for. Time, patience & practice is part of the answer. She'll get it with repeated attempts. Get her all hooked up and let her drag the leash around the house off & on. Roxy forgot about her collar after I started her with a harness. Got her a sweatshirt this winter. It had bands that go around the back legs. She just knew she'd never be able to use her legs again. lol Rolled around, flopped & everything else trying to figure out how to walk. Hysterical! After that she didn't even seem to notice that the harness was on. Wasn't long & she didn't fight me on putting on the harness or wearing it anymore. |
I had same problem with George, the harness the pet shop sold me has a wide strip underneath for his chest but when I put it on he would crawl to his cage and not budge, so I got him a thin strapped one and he loves it, no problem now. The back door was a problem to start with, my hubby would go outside for a smoke and George would want out too, but with a treat and praise that is no longer an issue, when I go out he just sits on his blanket and waits, but the greeting is lovely when I come back inside. He makes my life so enjoyable. |
To get her used to wearing it, maybe you can put it on her while she is in the house with you (not leaving her alone with it on) and then when she is used to wearing it, try attaching the leash and start training again that way? |
Put the part that goes over her head on your wrist and put a treat in your hand, let her nibble on the treat as you put it over her head. Then praise her for being such a good cooperative girl! The door thing is definately just the puppy in her. Maybe she needs a little more time outside to run around and use up all that puppy energy. If that is not possible, try playing a little fetch game in the kitchen floor or something! That energy has to go somewhere! |
Consider the Puppia Step-In soft harness Puppia Harness — Step in Dog Harness This is what we have - it is extremely easy to put on. Put their two front legs in, velcro it closed over their back and snap it closed. It is very soft, and fits quite snugly. They can not slip out of it, and it does not "cut" into them. The lead attaches in the center of the back. The placement makes it difficult for them to get at to bite. |
