running off into the distance !!! EEK... hi everyone !!! I know this is going to be my ault but we have a beautiful 18 mnth old spayed yorkie, she is house trained loving and very funny, the only problem is, since xmas day we hav nt been abeto let her off the leash when we take her down the beach. She just runs of , to other dogs, birds on the beach or other people. Its like she becomes a different dog , no trats , toys, balls shouting, ignoring, makes any difference.I just dont trust her not to come back and the road is quite near, any suggestions ?? i know she s despeate for a good run !! |
sounds like you need to get a very long tether line for her. I Would NOT allow her to run free, It could be deadly either by a dog attach or hit by a car. You could also use a long rope attached to her Harness so she can run. whatever you do be careful for her... Good luck |
You can teach her the "Come" command. Don't expect her to follow it in a place with a lot of distractions at first. You can use a tether as suggested at first to make sure you keep control over her. YorkieOwned5 is right that some dogs can't be trusted off leash... you have to use your judgment about where you let them off and how far away from you they are allowed to go. Also, maybe if she gets more stimulation / exercise at places other than the beach, she won't get quite as excited when you go there? |
I'd agree with YorkieOwned5, at least for the short term. For the long term, consider obedience classes. I'm often able to let mine off leash in situations like that because he has a good "stop" and a good "stay" command. But he's not perfect. If something else is more interesting than me, he can run off. I never trust him 100 percent, and I leash him the second I see something that I know he considers more interesting than me -- a dog, for instance. |
I'm going thru the exact same thing right now with one of mine My Mike just will not come on command The world is just WAY more exciting for him My Zach will come to me no matter what's out there but his brother? Forget about it I've tried the enticement .... the acting like I'm doing something just out of sight I can't trust him to be off leash yet He's still only 6 months old |
whatever you do,, dont let them off the leash while outside where they are able to get free and run... never trust the little devils.. . it could be very dangerous.. be safe, not sorry |
Morgan is the same way on the beach. she is good most of the time we are there and then she sees people walking along the beach and its good bye mommy, hello new people! she just loves people and other dogs so much. I tried a few times with her letting her off leash and seeing what she would do and its hopeless. she'll go home with anyone :rolleyes: now she stays on a retractable leash for her own safety |
My 2 year old is the same way however if I just leave the leash on without holding the other end, he won't run away. |
thankyou eveyone for your replies !!! I do walk her on an extended lead , i would love to take her to obedience classes but sadly on our little island it does nt exist !!! Walking along the beach is the norm as we dont have large forests or parks where we can take them, I just feel sad for her when the neighbours mini yorkie trots past good as gold off lead, and sophie is pulling like mad to get to him, she loves cheese but again it lasted 2 trips and then she lost interest, i would rather keep her safe than sorry.... |
