pooping outside???
 

Ok so my little one got his last set of shots this past weekend so we started taking him outside for potty times since then. He immediately starting peeing outside, no problems..yes we still have the occasional accident but overall hes been doing great! We praise him verbally and he loves going outside! He even goes to the door to go out sometimes (a work in progress).

Our issue is that he has yet to poop outside! He will go on a nice walk, go pee, try to eat the leaves, grass,lay down, etc...but then come in and poop on the carpet or the pee pad (Ive wised up after the first few times so started putting him in the gated kitchen with his pee pad right when we come inside)....

The pee pad is better than the carpet---but How do I transition him to outside for both pee and poo? We were hoping to eliminate pee pads all together, would it maybe be smarter to have them as a back up in the kitchen afterall??? Please advise what you would do!

Not sure about everyone else, but I do keep mine using a pad as well. This way I don't have to worry if I am out for a longer period of time. We also boat a lot and this alleviates having to go to shore all the time. Maggie will still do what your baby does. We'll go for a long walk and she'll run around and play and then come in and potty her pad. :( It's really hit or miss for us.

This sounds just like my little Dante:aimeeyork.
He does geat with peeing outside and does all that other stuff (try to eat the leaves, grass,lay down).
I think in time he will start to learn to Potty #2 outside.

Mine are pee pad trained. When we go out, they mark outside. Roxy will poop outside with no problems. TJ is about 4.5 y/o and has ONLY pooped outside 1x and he was in a dier emergency, otherwise, he wouldn't have done it :eek:

does TJ poop on pads inside? i can't get my girl to pee or poop outside, and peeing on the pads is hit or miss, but pooping is totally miss. i'll see her squat to poop and take her to a pad but oh man she will fight to get away and then play and act like she don't have to do nothing then when your not looking she will run and try and poop. One time i got lucky and blocked her from pooping 3 times and took her out and i guess she couldn't hold it any longer and pooped outside but that's the only luck i've had and can't get her to do it again :(

I would switch cold turkey. We never used pads at all. I took Loki out to the yard from the day we got him, we just kept him on a short leash near the door. Both of mine are house trained, Sammy was 10 months when we got her and she had a lot of accidents but she picked it up in a few months. They ring a bell when they want to go out. They go out a lot and I do have to accommodate their schedules, but I prefer it to them going in the house. Loki has a medical issue and he goes out to pee constantly, but he also pees a gallon every time he goes so pads would never work anyway. Sammy goes out when Loki goes out, but she doesn't actually have to go that often. Maybe every 4 hours if I wasn't letting Loki out anyway.

The expen is fine if it's on tile or you can use a crate too to keep him in when you can't watch him, like when you are cooking. I've posted tons of advice on here about training outside. Just search for Loki & house train :D Trust me, you don't have to settle unless you want to.

Both of mine run back and forth 15 times before pooping and walk while they poop. I'm not sure it's so easy for them to get it on the pad even if they try...

try to bring a poop pad outside infront of one of his favorite tree's or peeing area and if he poops reward him and do it for about a week and than gradually take it away and he will continue but continue to reward him until he learns to get rewarded when he comes back home :) oh trust me i learn alot from all the dog shows and dog trainner i ask lots of questions lol im curious..

Great Idea! When I got Milo I trained him to go outside on I live in the suburbs so it was on the grass, well the first time I took him to see my sister in the City (no grass) the boy would not poop he held it for almost 2 days I did not know what I was going to do LOL. I called the Vet and they told me to watch him really carefully the second he shows any sign of pooping rush him outside. Now 3 years later it still takes him a little longer to poop in the big city than he does in the country but he does do it.

I think i'm gonna try and skip the puppy pads, i don't care for them to much but she seemed to take a liking to them, but the last 2 days she has not used them :rolleyes: Last night she got me good, i let her out after work and usually she'll go to the pee pad but this time she went somewhere weird and squatted, so i picked up her and notice a little pee puddle took her to her pad and she just kept trying to walk away. So i was like well she finished peeing over their. Then she ran to a different spot and started squatting and i got her and she had peed again :mad: so i clean those to spots while keeping her in sight. I go to wash my hands and she follows me, and i dry my hands and see she is gone and couldn't find her, so i quickly go to her favorite poop places and nothing and finally i find her in a totally new different place eating her poop. i swear it was crazy. So now i'm just gonna take her straight outside to the leash to try and avoid what happend last night

well you are already ahead of me ...my puppy won't even poop or pee outside...even spending hours on end outside she will hold it in until she gets to her pee pad. and she is about 14 weeks so you would think she would do it where ever since she is not full y trained but no luck...this is my goal this summer to potty trained her outside. goodluck to you and give me your advise if ever she starts pooping outside ;)

lol that happens to my friend mother's dog's they are stub burn on concreate but i try to observe things that i watch or read and i seen on some show i forgot the name i think its called its me or the dog and the lady put wee wee pads outside cuz the dog would do accidents inside and she give him cheese or whatever treat she had but the owners had to keep up with it unless he wouldnt continue to do it and it seemed that part of the progress became natural and as soon as u take the paper away after a certain amount of time they get use to it i honestly think some dogs are embarrassed to poo and pee in public lol:D;)

I found the best way to make the transition was using his morning need to pee and poo to teach him where he is suppose to go.

Tazz sleeps on the bed and can't get off, so he waits til I wake up to let him off so he can do his business. When I first started, I put him in a pen with a pee pad right when I woke up and he would go pee and poo there since he probably had too. He eventually learned to go on the pads.

I did the same thing when transitioning him to go potty outside. I would bring him outside right when I woke up. At first he just wouldn't poop outside no matter what, but eventually he did in the morning. Praise him a lot afterwards and he will get the hang of it. Just gotta get him to go that first time!

Someone once told me to take some of their poop outside if they happen to do it in the house, that way when they go out to pee, they'll notice the poop out there and maybe get the idea that they can poop out there as well. I believe I tried it when Sasha was little, but I still think it took a little while. Whenever I went out to clean up poops, I usually always left 1 just so she could notice it out there.

Interesting! Lots of people responded on this thread that they had the same issue, and my little one Gatsby also refuses to poop outside even though he likes to pee out there... And he will also poop on a pad as soon as we get him inside (at least he never poops on the carpet or floor). And here I thought he was a freak since my other two yorkies (one passed away) LOVED to poop outside...

Its good to know Gatsby has lots of company. I will try bringing a pad outside and see if he takes the hint, but I seriously doubt he will. I think in order to train him to poop outside, I'd have to rush him outside as soon as we wake up in the morning (instead of the usual routine of him going on a pad in the bathroom); I just dont think I have the motivation to put that much extra time into training when I gotta get out of the house and head off to work in the AM...:rolleyes:

Oops double post

We started putting the pee pad just outside the patio door. Roxy would pee on it, but not poop... that she did on the deck but at least she was outside. (Inside she had gotten so she only peed on the pad, but moving spot to just in front of it & the door.)

A couple weeks ago she went to doggie daycare for 1/2 day to get some socialization she missed out on when younger due to my being ill for 6 weeks. 1st day-she was almost overwhelmed with it all & wouldn't go outside for anything, not even to be with the other dogs. 2nd day a week later & fewer dogs & she went outside with the other dogs, & didn't want to leave when I picked her up. (She's in love w/the owners little dog) The bonus was that for the first time after getting home she peed outside in the grass. Today her fencing was completed & we actually got poop in the yard too. YEA! Maybe pee pad days are over. (Doing happy dance!) She's going to daycare tomorrow too.

This may work for your little one if you have a daycare nearby. The place I take her to has webcams running. I can watch her on the internet the whole time. The people did a nice job watching out for her. She got along very well with various sizes of dogs.

My little girl had been started on paper training when we got her. We never knew. My male was "outside" trained. We'd let both out together. He'd go, but she was like "duh". I put a piece of newspaper right outside the door and bingo, she went. Did that for a few days, then quit putting the paper down. Then, she went outside without the paper.

We always had a door for easy bathroom access. Open the door, hook on the leashes, close the door, wait about 30 seconds to a minute (they liked privacy) , open the door, check for two wet spots, and voila, done. Seriously, it was that easy. Out that door meant bathroom only, no playing. I did it frequently when they were babies--about every hour or two. I think the consistancy worked. She was tougher. Sometimes only one wet spot, so I checked pee pees. Whoever was wet got a treat. She was usually the dry one, so no treat for her. I'd go through the ritual again--open the door, hook on the leash, close the door, check in a minute. If there was another wet spot, she got the treat too. She liked those treats, so she picked up quickly.

This place is so full of great information. :thumbup: I was going to ask about my little girl Krystal NOT wanting to pee or poo outside. I know she was about to pop today when we stopped on our trip, but she would not even think about peeing outside letting alone do a poop. It's nice to know that this is a growing thing and I just have to find the trick that will work for her.;)
