Help!!!NEED ADVISE ON POTTY TRAINING :) Hello I have a two year old Yorkie named Haleigh. I feel really embarrassed to admit to this, but I have tryed potty training haleigh several times in the past, and she just didnt get it. So I decided to use Puppy Diaphers for a few months. But here just recently since she turned two, I have a real high expection that she can get it, after I got her fixed 3-months ago, she gained alittle weight, and acts alittle more calmer. So i decided to give this one last try. I dont want her in diaphers for the rest of her life, I thought long and hard about it. So Im looking for anyone to give me some good hints, lead me in the right direction. Here is what I have been doing with her. At night haleigh sleeps in a baby play pen, beside my bed, she never goes potty in it. Never did. I let her out her morning and she goes potty outside, when she comes in I give her a treat and tell her she is a good girl. I let her run around in my site for a few mins before Im off to work, from there i put her in a large running pen for the day, there are pee pee pads in there which she uses. When I get home, I let her out every hour. She usually goes, but if its been 2 hours and she wont go for me, i put her in her play pen for 15 mins or so, than usually when i let her back out she will go outside, again than treating her with a treat. Please if anyone can give advise, or tips, that would be great......Thank you so much. Also if anyone could tell me how long it usually takes for them to caugh on. Its only been a week, she doesnt go to the door on her own,. I just pick her up and take her...... Thanks for listening, any advise would really really really help |
The first thing for you to do is to treat her when she goes potty outside...do it right then not when you get back inside! Normally a "Good girl!"...or..."Good potty!" will be enough. Give her a codeword...like potty...so when you take her out she know what you want her to do when you say "Go potty" She will associate "potty" with weeing and pooing and know that when she does this it makes you happy! To get her to go to the door, try using a bell. Hang a large bell to your door and everytime you take her to potty, take her out of that door and shake the bell. Once she gets the hang of this whole going out to potty thing she will learn to ring the bell (hitting it with her nose or pawing at it) to alert you that she needs to potty. I have rubbed a small bit of peanut butter on it to teach / treat them for ringing the bell. They even sell "doggie doorbells" for this type of training. Hope this helps! Good luck! |

The goal with the bell is to teach her to ring it by bumping it with her nose or pawing at it...that is where the peanut butter comes into play This will take a little while for her to get the hang of it but she will get it! One more thing that you can try is attaching a 6' lead to your belt...she will stay with you everywhere you go and you can keep an eye on her and watch for signs that she needs to potty. |
