Head Down..Always Sniffing!!! My 6 month old girl is a snoopy little girl!! She runs with her head down to the ground and is always sniffing the ground no matter where we go or what it is- parks, concrete, pavement, grass, carpet, hardwood. Is this something that she will grow out of? I can't get her to pay attention to me during a training session because she is sniffing everything. I'll say sit like 12 times before she finally stops sniffing and sits for 2 seconds. Then back to the sniffing! Shes such a cute girl to always hang her head down! :( Oh yeah, I have yet to successfully have her fully groomed because of all the sniffing, they are scared they will cut her and refuse to muzzle her. What should I do? |

This sounds just like my Lucy (10 months) ... everything is a new sniff ... everywhere ... constantly! However, we've managed to train her to 'sit' and 'wait', etc., successfully. It was a bit of a challenge, as we've trained her to both verbal and hand signals - and the hand sginals won't work if she's not watching! So we developed a key phrase: 'Lucy, watch me!" - and with persistence, it's worked well. We can now walk along a street and have her sit and wait at every kerb and roadside, as we direct her attention to us just in advance of giving a 'sit' or 'wait' command. As for grooming, her first session was a bit chaotic for the groomer, but when she went back the second time, she was as good as gold and came back beautifully groomed (including her face). Hot Rod was a sniffer when he was a puppy. I thought for sure he was going to knock himself out on the coffee table leg. lol. We didn't have that issue when we were training him. Maybe try training him in a room without distractions first? Maybe this will let him know you want him to focus on you? Sorry, I don't know if this is any help or not. Good luck! |

You should start your girl with short training sessions, in the same place, such as a quiet bedroom, or den or whatever room in your house provides NO distractions and nothing to sniff, lol Once she has some of the basics down, progress to very short sessions outside, depending on what you are training. She is a pup and they do this, especially when going to new places, new smells, lol Have you taken her to a puppy training class? This could be very helpful as well. :) |
Hehe .... she's a dog Dogs primary sense is through their nose That's how they sense the world around them For us it's our vision If you want her to lift her head more then make it worth her while play with her more and engage her more she'll certainly lift her head for that |
