Wont walk on a leash!! My new baby, Thom, will NOT walk on a leash. He will plant his bottom firmly on the ground and shake as if hes scared to death. How can i motivate him? |
You might try just putting the leash on him for a few minutes at a time each day without walking him at first, so he can get used to the feel of the leash. Then build up from there. Good luck! |
How old is Thom? My Oliver wouldn't walk when he was a baby either. He didn't act scared (just kind of stubborn), so maybe its not the same the same issue. It was just very slow going at first (took 45 min just to get around the block). I think we used treats to coax him step by step and just waited for him. He eventually got the idea that we weren't moving until he moved. It was just one step at a time, then two, then 10...now he leads the way on our walks! |

since you call this pup your new baby I'm assuming that he's still very young Puppies don't come with an inbred sense of knowing how to walk on a leash You slap one on and you'll get one frightened little puppy you need to get your pup used to having the collar and leash on before you start leash training Put the collar and leash on everyday for a few mins and let him run around with it on this will get him used to the feeling and weight of it around his neck then once that's done start lifting it up and just hold it while he leads you around then and only then can you think of trying to entice him with a treat to walk with you |

Well, we actually had some success today, i was so proud of him! I carried him outside, and let him walk around with the leash dangling. Hes a very timid dog to begin with, so he was just sniffing about, and slowly picked up the leash. He will walk approx 50 feet from where i place him down, then go back, lol. And found his way to my front door to go back inside! Im sure there will be a day he'll be begging to go out, haha. Macy does. We never had this problem with her. And he is 6 months by the way! :animal36 |
It takes time and patience; they wont do it till they are ready to try it. Trixie started walking on the leash at 8 months. Now she goes to it, which is hanging on the door, when she wants to go out. just put it on the puppy and let him drag it for a little while. Do not let him play with it. |
